Perceived Benefits of Using Complementary and Alternative Medicine by Race/Ethnicity Among Midlife and Older Adults in the United States
Objective: To describe, for a national sample of midlife and older adults, the types of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) used for health and wellness and the perceived benefits of CAM use by race/ethnicity. Method: Using data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, we ran multiple logistic regression models to estimate the odds of each perceived benefit among adults ages 50 and older. Results: More than 38% of midlife and olde…

Increasing Response Rates in a Survey of Medicaid Enrollees
OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate the effect of pairing a mixed-mode mail and telephone methodology with a prepaid US 2.00 dollars cash incentive on response rates in a survey of Medicaid enrollees stratified by race and ethnicity. RESEARCH DESIGN: Sampling was conducted in 2 stages. The first stage consisted of a simple random sample (SRS) of Medicaid enrollees. In the second stage, American Indian, African American, Latino, Hmong, and Somali en…
State Variation in SCHIP Allocations
Allocations for the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) varied 22% per state between 1999 and 2002. The funding fluctuations present significant problems for states as they develop budget priorities under difficult fiscal conditions. We examine sources of the variation in state allocations during the first four years of SCHIP, focusing on the Current Population Survey's "child component" of the allocation formula. We consider the tr…

Uncovering the Missing Medicaid Cases and Assessing their Bias for Estimates of the Uninsured
General population surveys of health insurance coverage are thought to undercount Medicaid enrollment, which may bias estimates of the uninsured. This article describes the results of an experiment undertaken in conjunction with a general population survey in Minnesota. Responses to health insurance questions by a known sample of public program enrollees are analyzed to determine possible reasons for the undercount and the amount of bias introduc…
The Effect of Response Categories on Questionnaire Answers
This article reports the effect that the ranges presented in answer categories for survey questions can have on respondent answers. Response categories were manipulated in a split-ballot survey conducted in both telephone and mail modes. These categories, presented in the separate ballots, overlapped in one category; the other categories were unique to each ballot. The experiment was conducted on four questions: two frequent and mundane and two r…
