The objectives of this study were to analyze the prevalence of firearm safety training and secure gun storage practices among American gun owners. We used nationally-representative survey data to estimate the impact of previously untested predictors of secure firearm storage. Findings show that older gun owners, gun owners living in metropolitan statistical areas, and low-SES gun owners are less likely to use secure firearm storage methods. Gun o…
Perceived Dangerousness Mediates Punitive Attitudes Toward Sex Offenders
The current study used an experimental vignette ( n = 1,093) to examine the effects of perpetrator sex and age, and victim sex and age, on simulated juror sentencing recommendations for individuals convicted of sexual offenses (ICSO). Path analyses were used to see if differences in punitive attitudes could be explained by perceptions of dangerousness participants attached to experimentally manipulated variables, as hypothesized by attribution th…

Examining Sex- and Sexuality-Based Bias in Punitive Attitudes Toward Offenders Convicted of Intimate Partner Crimes
This experimental vignette study used nationally representative survey data ( n = 841) to examine the effects of perpetrator sex and sexuality and victim sex on simulated juror punitivity and sentencing recommendations for individuals convicted of aggravated assault and domestic abuse. Results show participants recommended longer sentences and higher fines for male than for female offenders, and for those who victimized women than for those who v…
The cultural embeddedness of academic books on knowing, feeling, and queering video games
Notes1 Add to this, the rising "gamification" of services and products has rather forcefully ensured that whether we perceive ourselves as gamers or not is largely irrelevant (see Hamari, Koivisto, and Sarsa 2014 Hamari, J., J. Koivisto, and H. Sarsa. 2014. Does gamification work? A literature review of empirical studies on gamification. In Proceedings of the Forty-Seventh Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, ed. R.H. Spragu…
Anticipated innovations for the blue economy
The mission policy approach to the sustainable blue economy has identified as critical the ability to anticipate the emergence of a wide range of feasible innovations as they enter the transactional environment of organizations in the marine and maritime sector. This article contributes to that growing effort by harnessing the wisdom of the crowd and presents more than 60 crowdsourced, time-specific innovation forecasts expected to impact maritim…
Business ecosystems and the view from the future
Ecosystems are viewed as important sources of innovation. While contracts, rules, policies, and industrial standards have been identified as important for coordinating and aligning inter-firm relationships, tools for the collective, collaborative orchestration of ecosystems have yet to be fully identified and articulated by scholars. The core contribution of this paper, the authors contend, is that corporate foresight tools, as applied at the lev…
Making the Grade during Pandemic
This is an article that draws on the institutional work literature about provisional institutions. To date, nearly every U.S. sector has been impacted by COVID-19. To sustain their core missions, highly institutionalized organizations such as universities have had to rethink foundational structures and policies. Using a historical ethnographic approach to investigate records from faculty senate deliberations at 'Rural State University' (RSU), the…
The State of State Theory
Few great books have been written on the topic of state theory over the past thirty or so years. Sure, Charles Tilly’s (1975, ed.) The Formation of National States in Western Europe or Theda Skocpol’s (1979),States & Social Revolutions or maybe even R. M. MacIver’s (1926),The Modern State or Dwight Waldo’s (1948),The Administrative State were true game-changers and, thus, created identifiable rifts or the equivalent of “fractals” within state the…
Writing for the public
It is not easy to write for the public. But, as we shall see, that is what the authors set out to do in the texts under examination in this review essay. In The Quantified Self, Lupton (2016) intro

A new direction in political sociology
This essay reviews works in (political) sociology that offer alternatives to sociology-as-usual. Sociologists with even fleeting awareness of the recent history of political sociology are surely familiar with the cultural turn, the global turn, and the turn toward complexity; however, another turn seems to be afoot, one toward existential concerns that direct us to recover how people experience ‘the complex contradictions of the social and politi…

Latour’s greatest hits, reassembled
It seems peculiar that a non-theory, anti-method has managed to become canonical, but that is what Bruno Latour will introduce you to in his book; the post-pluralist, post-humanist attitude called Actor-Network-Theory (ANT). Drawing together heaps of controversial research, Latour resuscitates ANT after its 1999 death (see Law and Hassard 1999). Like Graham Harman’s book about Latour, The Prince of Networks (2009), Reassembling the Social is the …
Actor-Network State
This conceptual article draws on literature in the sociology of science on modelling. The authors suggest that if state theory can be conceptualized as an 'engine' rather than merely a 'camera', in that policy is mobilized to make the world fit the theory, then this has implications for conceptualizing states. To examine this possibility the authors look through the lens of actor-network theory (ANT) and in doing so articulate a relationship betw…
The Effect of School on Overweight in Childhood
Objectives. To determine whether school or nonschool environments contribute more to childhood overweight, we compared children’s gains in body mass index (BMI) when school is in session (during the kindergarten and first-grade school years) with their gains in BMI when school is out (during summer vacation). Methods. The BMIs of 5380 children in 310 schools were measured as part of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Cohort. We …
Bringing technology back in
Sociologists that study organizations often analyze the museum from a cultural perspective that emphasizes the norms of the museum industry and the larger society. We review this literature and suggest that sociologists should take into account the technical demands of museums. Drawing on insights from social studies of technology, we argue that museums are better understood as organizations that must accomplish legitimate goals with specific tec…
Science and Technology Studies Saves Planet Earth via Latour
This book is about the exhaustion of fossil fuels and the disposal of toxic waste. It is about global warming and rainforest depletion too even though Bruno Latour never says a word specifically about these environ mental controversies. His agenda is to provide a new philosophical founda tion for 'political ecology'. The project is surely ontological, as Latour dispenses with such useless distinctions as things versus humans. It is also epistemol…
