    Kate Lilley•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2019

This essay tracks the poetics and erotics of queer early/modern association as a discontinuous it-narrative. Beginning with Keats’ well-known letter in praise of Katherine Philips and the documented bookplate of Violet Trefusis in a notable copy of Philips’ Poems (1667), I retell the story of an infamous modernist sapphic scandal for my own purposes: the tragic history of Violet Trefusis and Vita Sackville-West viewed through their privileged imm…

Archaeologists working in the tropical Pacific have demonstrated the feasibility and value of including fish vertebrae in midden analyses, and recent New Zealand studies draw similar conclusions. This work provides an illustrated guide to the identification of vertebrae from key New Zealand fish taxa and shows the effects of including vertebrae on a large fishbone assemblage from southern New Zealand. We note major differences between New Zealand…

  • Mediations on Emergent Occasions

    Open Access•Kate Lilley•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies Review•2012•Cited by: 1

Frank O'Hara's 1957 poetry collection, Meditations in an Emergency, features in Season Two of Mad Men (2008) as a talismanic phrase and object. Pressed into service as Matthew Weiner's valentine to his returning viewers, the circulation and citation of the book across the season, through different diegetic and extradiegetic levels, aligns poetry, advertising and quality serial television drama as textual modes intent, above all, on creating attac…

    Kate Lilley•ARTICLE•Humanities Research•2010

de Wolway, the 'German Princess' (1635-73), was the subject of a sensational trial at the Old Bailey in 1663 in which she successfully defended herself against charges of bigamy and imposture brought by her new husband, John Carleton, an eighteen-year-old lawyer's clerk.Even before the trial began, the incarcerated 'German Princess' was the talk of London; her acquittal confirmed her as a figure of scandalous celebrity with a reputation for formi…

  • Tranter’s Plots

    Open Access•Kate Lilley•ARTICLE•Australian Literary Studies•1989

Tranter's work has consistently engaged problems of deixis (grammatical orientation) and interpretation which, in turn, become problems of showing and telling, of representation and narrative. The unstable relations between the viewer and what is viewed, the writer and what is written, the printed text on the page and the eyes which travel over that surface: these issues dominate Tranter's highly repetitive, which is to say concentrated, body of …
