  • Slavery's Enduring Legacy: Executions in Modern America

Margaret Vandiver, David Giacopassi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal…•2007

Using data on post-Greggexecutions and death sentences, we explore the previously observed, but not well understood, relationship between slavery and the death penalty. We classify modern states into categories focused on their jurisdictional law and practice of slavery circa 1860. Our analyses reveal that the relationship between slavery and modern executions is stronger even than previously recognized, with 90.6% of post-Greggexecutions occurri…

  • Ignoring the Past: Coverage of Slavery and Slave Patrols in Criminal Justice Texts

K B Turner, Keith Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•2006

The authors reviewed 18 criminal justice and 13 policing texts published since 2000 to explore the amount of coverage these texts give to the relationship between slavery, slave patrols, and the early American criminal justice system. To provide a basis for comparison, 14 introductory texts published in the 1970s were also reviewed. We found coverage of topics related to slavery to be nearly nonexistent in the 1970s texts and to be perfunctory in…

  • The Tennessee Slave Code: A Legal Antecedent to Inequities in Modern Capital Cases

Margaret Vandiver, David Giacopassi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal…•2003

Numerous studies have found evidence of racial discrimination in the imposition of the death penalty, particularly in the South. In this article, the authors posit that the legal antecedents of modern discrimination in capital cases are found in the codified rules that governed slavery. Using the capital punishment provisions of the 1858 Slave Code of Tennessee, the biases inherent in the laws of the Old South are documented. The discriminatory p…

  • I Hope Someone Murders Your Mother: An Exploration of Extreme Support for the Death Penalty

Margaret Vandiver, David Giacopassi et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 23

Although general support for the death penalty is decreasing, a segment of the pro-death penalty population continues to support capital punishment with great vehemence. Extreme support for the death penalty is expressed through angry, confrontational, and sometimes threatening verbal attacks against condemned prisoners and opponents of capital punishment. Expressions of this support are especially strong around the time of highly publicized exec…

Open Access•B Grant Stitt, David Giacopassi et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2000•References: 1

This article compared rates of underage casino gambling by students in two different regions of the country. Questionnaires were completed by 420 students at the University of Memphis and 415 students at the University of Nevada, Reno. Although Reno has long had casinos, Memphis residents have had access to casinos only since 1992 with the legalization of casino gambling in nearby Mississippi. The results indicate that 24.2% of underage Memphis r…

    Open Access•David R Forde, David Giacopassi•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1999

Using data for 50 states (1980–1996), regression analyses with control for population size showed homicide rates predicted traffic fatality rates and traffic fatalities predicted homicide rates. Population size was inversely correlated with traffic fatality rates and directly with homicide rates, supporting prior work of Lester and of Spivak and suggesting further work on incivilities is desirable

Margaret Vandiver, David Giacopassi•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•1997

We administered questionaires to 323 introductory students and 45 seniors majoring in criminal justice to determine how well students grasp the magnitude of the crime problem relative to other mortality conditions. Almost 50 percent of the introductory students estimated that 250,000 or more murders were committed each year in the United States; 15 percent estimated that one million or more murders occurred annually. Senior criminal justice major…

  • Per Capita Alcohol Consumption and Crime: An Unexamined Relationship

David Giacopassi, David J Giacopassi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1991•References: 7

On a global basis, alcohol has been recognized to be associated with all forms of human problems. A thorough review of the literature on crime and alcohol-related problems reveals a paucity of empirical studies of the relationship of alcohol consumption to crime rates. This study examines that relationship and suggests what might be additional analytical refinements which should be made to further specify the relationship of alcohol consumption t…

  • Limitations of assessing attitudinal change among students of criminal justice

Michael B Blankenship, David Giacopassi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•1990

Establishing causal relationships is an elusive process for criminal justice researchers. Elimination of rival causal factors tends to be the most problematic area. This practice note first describes the methodology of a recent study conducted by the authors and then elaborates on the methodological problems inherent in the search to establish a causal relationship between course work and attitudinal change among students enrolled in introductory…

David Giacopassi, David J Giacopassi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1980•References: 1

A number of studies have focused on public perceptions of police and have concluded that black citizens have lower evaluations of police than their white counterparts. A review of the recent literature reveals that few studies have compared black and white respondents on attitudes toward strike activity among police despite the growing militancy of public employees. In this paper, the significant relationship uncovered between race and attitudes …
