  • The Relief of Poverty in Mid Nineteenth-Century Colyton

    Open Access•Jean Robin•ARTICLE•Rural History•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The welfare state emerged in 1948 when the National Assistance Act finally abolished the New Poor Law Forty-two years later, as politicians and bureaucrats struggle to keep increasing expenditure within bounds, the existence of the welfare state in its present form is under threat. Just over 150 years ago, the Old Poor Law was presenting parish ratepayers with a similar problem of rising costs, leading in 1834 to a fundamental reorganisation into…

  • Illegitimacy in Colyton, 1851–1881

    Open Access•Jean Robin•ARTICLE•Continuity and Change•1987•Cited by: 4

  • Prenuptial pregnancy in a rural area of Devonshire in the mid-nineteenth century

    Open Access•Jean Robin•ARTICLE•Continuity and Change•1986•Cited by: 2

The popularly held belief that in Victorian times a rigid code of sexual behaviour was in operation throughout the country, and that transgression of the code resulted in loss of respectability, has been under attack for some time now. One of the weapons used in the assault has been the extent of prenuptial pregnancy during the period compared with earlier centuries. In the first of his two papers on prenuptial pregnancy in England, published in …

  • Family Care of the Elderly in a Nineteenth-Century Devonshire Parish

    Open Access•Jean Robin•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•1984•Cited by: 6•References: 1

The focus of this paper is on the part played by children and relatives in the care of the elderly in a Devonshire parish in the mid-nineteenth century. The cohort of men and women aged 50–59 years recorded in the 1851 census was divided into two groups, according to whether or not the parish registers or censuses showed members to have had offspring who survived childhood. Cohort members and their families were then traced through the 1861 and 1…

  • Moors and Canary Islanders on the Coast of the Western Sahara

    Jean Robin•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1955

The coastal waters of the western Sahara, between the 19th and 24th parallels, are among the richest in the world in fish. Their abundance was catalogued in the course of Professor Gruvel's x mission in 1905, and it has been the subject of subsequent research. In spite of a life remote from seafaring ways, the Moors or Beydanes, the great camel-owning nomads of the region, have never been unaware of these resources; they have even been the issue …

  • Le problème démographique au Japon

    Open Access•Jean Robin•ARTICLE•Population•1951
