  • Mexican Samples, Latino DNA: The Trajectory of a National Genome in Transnational Science

Open Access•Emily Elizabeth Vasquez, Vivette García Deister•ARTICLE•Engaging Science Technology and…•2019

Experts have widely promoted developing country investment in national genome projects in order to ensure their inclusion in medical genomic advances, to protect their genomes from foreign exploitation, and to foster their participation in a future genomics-based bioeconomy. In this context, the Mexican federal government’s investments to establish the National Institute of Genomic Medicine in 2004, that institute’s subsequent efforts to map the …

  • Nation and the Absent Presence of Race in Latin American Genomics

    Open Access•P Wade, Vivette García Deister et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2014•Cited by: 21•References: 97

Recent work on genomics and race makes the argument that concepts and categories of race are subtly reproduced in the practice of genomic science, despite the explicit rejection of race as meaningful biological reality by many geneticists. Our argument in this paper is that racialized meanings in genomics, rather than standing alone, are very often wrapped up in ideas about nation. This seems to us a rather neglected aspect in the literature abou…

  • Aproximaciones cientificas al mestizo mexicano

    Open Access•Carlos Lopez-Beltran, Vivette García Deister•ARTICLE•História Ciências Saúde-Manguinhos•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 18
