Searching for the remains of an Early Bronze Age city at Tell Qubr Abu al-'Atiq (Syria) through archaeological investigations and GPR imaging
Ground‐penetrating radar assessment of the medieval arch bridge of San Antón, Galicia, Spain
Several arched masonry bridges are listed historical monuments in Spain, which are valued tourist attractions or local landmarks. They are maintained by several organizations dedicated to the cultural heritage such as the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). Many of these important structures are the oldest constructions still in use within the transportation infrastructure and as a result of the increase in traffic loads and th…
Three‐dimensional ground‐penetrating radar strategies over an indoor archaeological site: Convent of Santo Domingo (Lugo, Spain)
Indoor archaeological sites are particularly adapted for ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) surveying because the environment is uniform throughout the year. This makes them excellent for the application of meticulous three‐dimensional surveys under repeatable conditions. The objective of this work was to test different dense grid strategies and three‐dimensional imaging techniques in order to improve detection of subfloor targets. Application of the…
From Celtiberians to Romans: Combined geophysical (3D GPR and fluxgate gradiometer) prospection for the archaeological characterization of Castro de la Magdalena (León, Spain)
Introduction A 3D GPR investigation, combined with fluxgate magnetometer, has been carried out on a hill fort called Castro de la Magdalena in León (Northwest of Spain). The archaeological investigation started after remains of Celtiberian culture (dated from the first Iron Age) and a later Roman occupation were discovered in a town nearby. Figure 1: A shows the results of shallow excavations (15-30 cm) over the Roman settlement. B shows location…
