Tonal languages without tone: Downstep in Drubea and Numèè (Oceanic, New Caledonia)
In this article, I analyse the word-prosodic system of Drubea and Numèè, two of the rare tonal Oceanic languages. Building on Rivierre’s (1973) seminal work, I show that the word-prosodic system of these two languages can be analysed as involving only register features: an underlying downstep and a postlexical epenthetic upstep. Drubea and Numèè are thus tonal languages without tones stricto sensu. This new type of word-prosodic system has both t…
Accent and tone: The double origin of the Paicî prosodic system
What happens when an accentual language develops a tonal contrast from laryngeal features: is the accent system kept alongside the new tone contrast? Is it lost? Do both prosodic systems merge? In this paper, I present the tone system of Paicî, which illustrates the latter outcome. Paicî seems to possess two integrated prosodic subsystems: a purely tonal H vs. L contrast, and a typologically unusual downstep with accentual properties. Building on…
Towards a phonological typology of the Kalahari Basin Area languages
This article reports some results of the first large-scale, comprehensive survey of the phonological systems of the Khoisan languages of the Kalahari Basin Area. These languages are famous for their large sets of click phonemes, a typologically rare characteristic otherwise found only in a limited number of languages worldwide. They are also unique because the click phonemes carry a high functional load in terms of phonemic and lexical distinctio…
Oppression
Oppression1 Françoise Lionnet (bio) In her disquietingly incandescent poetic novella, La vie de Josephin le fou, completed with the energy of urgency in just two weeks in November 2002,2 Mauritian author Ananda Devi explores Joséphin's relationship with the protective aquatic environment that becomes his refuge from domestic abuse and maternal rejection: J'ai pris l'habitude d'aller dans la mer chaque fois que le monde d'en haut criait trop fort.…
Theoretical approaches to grammatical tone
Tone is distinct from other phonological phenomena both qualitatively and quantitatively (Hyman 2011), and has been instrumental in shaping phonological theory in many ways. However, the contributions to current linguistic theory of “grammatical tone’ (GT) – a type of non-concatenative morphology where a morpheme is expressed at least in part by tone and/or tone changes – have been less apparent. In this paper, we take stock of the types of GT pa…
The features and geometry of tone in Laal
Features are standard in segmental analysis but have been less successfully applied to tone. Subtonal features have even been argued to be less satisfactory for the representation of African tone than tonal primitives such as H, M, L (Hyman 2010; Clements et al. 2010). I argue that the two-feature system of Yip (1980) and Pulleyblank (1986) offers a straightforward account of the tonology of Laal, an endangered, three-tone isolate of southern Cha…
Subtonal features in a three-tone language: Evidence from Laal
In this paper, I provide arguments in favor of subtonal features, with data from Laal, an endangered, three-tone isolate language of southern Chad. I show that a system using the two features [upper] and [raised] (Yip 1980, Pulleyblank 1986) offers a straightforward account of properties of the Mid tone that are otherwise impossible to account for using the three tonal primitives H, M, L. I show that Laal provides evidence for parallels between t…
The gender system of Laal
This paper describes the gender system of Laal, a language isolate of Chad. Laal has a strictly semantic, partly sex-based gender system making use of three semantic features: [±human], [masculine/feminine], and [±abstract], defining four genders: human masculine, human feminine, neuter, and abstract. Gender is covert on nouns; it is marked only on agreeing pronouns and functional words. The morphological marking and structure of the gender syste…
Sub-Saharan Africa
This chapter maps out the tonal, accentual, and intonational properties of sub-Saharan African languages, focusing particularly on Niger-Congo. It distinguishes tone systems by the number of contrastive tone heights and contours and their tonal distributions, as well as grammatical functions of tone. It considers positional prominence effects potentially analysed as word accent and concludes with discussion of both intonational pitch and length m…
Areal patterns in the vowel systems of the Macro-Sudan Belt
This paper investigates the areal distribution of vowel systems in the Macro-Sudan Belt, an area encompassing most of the western and central parts of northern Sub-Saharan Africa. We report on a survey of 681 language varieties with entries coded for two phonological features: advanced tongue root (ATR) harmony and the presence of interior vowels (i.e. non-peripheral vowels [ɨ ɯ ɜ ə ʌ ... ]). Our results show that the presence of ATR harmony in t…
Phantom structure: A representational account of floating tone association
This paper focuses on the association of floating tones. One type we call "phonological association", where the tone-bearing unit (TBU) the floating tone associates to is determined by the phonological grammar, e.g. to a default position like a stressed syllable or domain edge. We contrast this with another type we call "targeted association", whereby the floating tone targets a numerical position , e.g. a floating H associates to the fourth TBU …

A theory of subfeatural representations: The case of rounding harmony in Laal
This paper introduces subfeatural representations to capture subphonemic distinctions at work in ‘subphonemic teamwork’. The unusual case of Laal is presented, in which rounding harmony requires two triggers: a round vowel and a labial consonant. The coarticulatory effect of the labial consonant is shown, on the basis of instrumental evidence, to incur a distinctive, but non-contrastive, intermediate level of rounding on the target vowel, analyse…
Creoles and Creolization
The term “Creole” refers to the racialized identities of people in certain parts of the former European colonial empires; to their everyday cultural practices; and to the languages they speak. “Creolization” denotes the experiences of displacement, dispossession, and transcultural mixing whereby identities are altered, new social agents emerge, and different cultural phenomena are forged as people retain aspects of their individual traditions, im…
Demonstrative and relative constructions in Ju: A diachronic account
This paper focuses on the various demonstrative and relative constructions attested in the two Ju dialectal groups for which some level of documentation is available, viz. North-Central and South-Eastern, and proposes a unified diachronic account of the diversity of properties and uses of these constructions. The main claim is that exophoric demonstratives were verbs in Proto-Ju. Demonstrative and relative constructions in modern Ju dialects are …
Doubly Triggered Harmony in Laal as Subphonemic Agreement by Correspondence
Multiple-trigger assimilations pose notoriously difficult problems to standard autosegmental analyses (Flemming 1997). I present the unusual double-trigger rounding harmony of Laal (unclassified, Chad), where V 1 in a disyllabic stem assimilates in rounding to a same-height round V 2 , iff the root contains a labial consonant. I show that Agreement-by-Correspondence, initially developed for consonant agreement (Hansson 2001, Rose & Walker 2004), …

Littératures francophones: Parodies, pastiches, réécritures
Au moment où on s’interroge sur le sort des langues dans une perspective de mondialisation, il est important de réfléchir aux conditions d’existence des littératures de langue française, à leurs interrelations, mais aussi à leur manière de coexister avec des littératures mieux établies et plus anciennes, comme la littérature française. Les littératures francophones ont en commun d’être de jeunes littératures et leurs écrivains, placés dans des si…
Languages, Literatures, Pedagogies: The MLA, Africa, and Diaspora Studies
How do the literatures of Africa and its diaspora fare in the present structure of the Modern Language Association? Let me begin by suggesting that they appear to do better than the literatures of Asia or Central Europe. Since French, English, and Portuguese are commonly spoken in the parts of the African continent that were subjected to the corresponding colonial presence and educational policies, those who have appropriated European languages a…

Cosmopolitan or Creole Lives? Globalized Oceans and Insular Identities
To understand the historical dynamics of the cosmopolitan Indian Ocean region requires a comparative engagement with both the notions of cosmopolitanism and creolization. Although both presuppose patterns of movement and degrees of mixing, the nouns cosmopolitan and Creole and the realities they connote are likely to be seen as polar opposites, belonging to incommensurable coordinates of time and space. The challenge is to bring into dialogue int…
Creole Vernacular Theatre: Transcolonial Translations in Mauritius
Creole-language literatures from the Caribbean or the Indian Ocean generally fall into two broad categories: "content" or source of knowledge about the local culture, and mimetic or pedagogical activity aimed at transposing European classics into vernacular languages.
