  • From manual to machine: Assessing the efficacy of large language models in content analysis

Andrew Pilny, Kelly G Mcaninch et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research Reports•2024

This study compares the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) and human coders in predicting relational uncertainty from textual data. Employing various LLMs (gpt-4.0-turbo, gpt-3.5-turbo, Claude 2, llama7b-v2-chat, and llama13b-v2-chat), we found that these models perform comparably to human coders, with only minor differences in Mean Squared Error (MSE) values. However, not all LLMs performed equally, underscoring the importance of model …

  • Integrating relational turbulence theory and the theory of resilience and relational load to investigate the relationships of couples with chronic illness

    Kelly G Mcaninch, E D Basinger et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Quarterly•2023

Chronic illness is both prevalent in U.S. adults and influential in people’s lives and relationships. In this study, we integrate relational turbulence theory with the theory of resilience and relational load to consider associations between perceptions of the relationship, relational maintenance, and two global relationship qualities: resilience and relational load. Results from a cross-sectional online survey of 100 dyads in which at least one …

  • Protective Buffering and Deception as Moderators of Relational Turbulence among Military Couples

    Open Access•Kelly G Mcaninch, Bryan Abendschein et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Studies•2021

Research suggests that relational uncertainty corresponds with circumscribed communication, yet prior studies have not investigated the related constructs of falsifying information (deception) and concealing concerns to protect a partner (protective buffering). We grounded our investigation in the logic of relational uncertainty theorizing, which explains how uncertainty about a relationship complicates communication and corresponds with appraisa…

  • Suspicion about a partner's deception and trust as roots of relational uncertainty during the post-deployment transition

    Open Access•L K Knobloch, Lynne M Knobloch-Fedders et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 62

Relational uncertainty is both prominent and pivotal during the transition from deployment to reintegration. Most prior research has considered the outcomes rather than the origins of relational uncertainty, hampering the development of interventions for military couples. We theorize about two predictors of relational uncertainty during the post-deployment transition: suspicion about a partner's deception and trust. Results of an 8-wave longitudi…

  • Couples managing chronic illness: A test of the extended theoretical model of communal coping

    Open Access•E D Basinger, Erin C Wehrman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 52

How individuals in romantic partnerships cope with health challenges either separately or together has a profound impact on their individual and relational well-being. The goal of this investigation was to test the logic of the recently extended Theoretical Model of Communal Coping (TMCC) by assessing how the two dimensions of communal coping, shared appraisal and joint action, are related to individual and relational well-being. Dyadic survey da…

  • Using Supervised Machine Learning in Automated Content Analysis: An Example Using Relational Uncertainty

Andrew Pilny, Kelly G Mcaninch et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Methods and Measures•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The goal of this research is to make progress towards using supervised machine learning for automated content analysis dealing with complex interpretations of text. For Step 1, two humans coded a sub-sample of online forum posts for relational uncertainty. For Step 2, we evaluated reliability, in which we trained three different classifiers to learn from those subjective human interpretations. Reliability was established when two different metric…

  • Relational turbulence among military couples after reunion following deployment

    Open Access•L K Knobloch, Kelly G Mcaninch et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2016

Reintegration following deployment is a pivotal time for returning service members and at‐home partners. We test logic derived from the relational turbulence model about depressive symptoms, relational uncertainty, and interference from a partner as predictors of people's appraisals of turmoil during the post‐deployment transition. Participants were 118 military couples who completed an online questionnaire once per month for the first 3 months a…

  • Grief Communication and Privacy Rules: Examining the Communication of Individuals Bereaved by the Death of a Family Member

    E D Basinger, Erin C Wehrman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Communication•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 20

Communication about one’s grief is both essential and complicated. We employ communication privacy management theory to examine how bereaved individuals manage the revelation and concealment of private information about the death of a parent or sibling. In-depth interviews (N = 21) with the bereaved indicate that (a) they conceptualize information surrounding the death and their grief as private, (b) they create rules to govern their private info…

  • A Grounded Theory of Students' Long-Distance Coping With a Family Member's Cancer

    Open Access•E D Basinger, Erin C Wehrman et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 35

In this study, we explore how family members cope with one source of stress-cancer diagnosis and treatment. We suggest that coping away from one's family is characterized by constraints that are not common to proximal coping. We conducted six focus groups with college students ( N = 21) at a university in the United States to investigate their long-distance coping experiences and used grounded theory methods to develop a model of college students…
