  • Racist Stacking in Professional Soccer in Germany

    Open Access•Tina Nobis, Felicia Lazaridou•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 60

Racist stacking is a phenomenon in team sports in which Black players are underrepresented in tactical and leading positions, while they are overrepresented in decentralized and physical positions. In this article, we propose that racist stacking is a type of institutional racism characterized by racist ascriptions incorporated in the daily routines of sport institutions. We explored whether racist stacking happens in soccer in Germany based on t…

  • Othering in sport-related research

    Open Access•Tina Nobis, Nihad El-Kayed•ARTICLE•European Journal for Sport and…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 9

The article explores how sport-related research contributes to the construction and reproduction of immigrants and their descendants as ‘Others’. This process, referred to as ‘Othering’ in this paper, is to be understood as a hegemonic act of ascribing otherness to social groups, marking them as being essentially different, generalising these alleged differences and transferring this alleged otherness into inferiority. This paper elaborates on th…

  • (Not) being granted the right to belong-Amateur football clubs in Germany

    Open Access•Tina Nobis, Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 74

Empirical studies show that first- and second-generation immigrants are less likely to be members of sports clubs than their non-immigrant peers. Common explanations are cultural differences and socioeconomic disadvantages. However, lower participation rates in amateur sport could be at least partly due to ethnic discrimination. Are minority ethnic groups granted the same right to belong as their non-immigrant peers? To answer this question, this…

  • Social inequality and sport in Germany – a multidimensional and intersectional perspective

Tina Nobis, Nihad El-Kayed•ARTICLE•European Journal for Sport and…•2019•Cited by: 14•References: 9

In this article, we stress that class plays an important role in life choices, lifestyles and access to valuable resources and that it thus also matters for adolescent sport participation. However, as structures of social inequalities have become more complex and as sport cultures have diversified, multidimensional and intersectional approaches are needed to uncover and discuss class patterns in different settings of sport participation. Based on…

    Tina Nobis, Katrin Albert•ARTICLE•Sport und Gesellschaft•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 13
