An analytical framework to understand the problematization of urban (historical) animals
Despite being common, the problematization of animals is ill-understood and undertheorized in urban geography. Being problematized has significant implications for animals: not only in how they are subjected to violent disciplinary practices but also in how they are made epistemically visible (or not) as urban subjects. That is, problematization objectifies animals and can contribute to their physical and epistemic in/visibility in cities. One ef…
Who Eats, Where, What, and How? Covid-19, Food Security, and Canadian Foodscapes
In April 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we four participated in a panel discussing Canada’s paradoxical foodscapes.1 Our ideas about what constitutes food security and the populations with which it is concerned varied considerably. However, by presenting our ideas parallel to one another, we felt we were perhaps able to garner a deeper, somewhat more complex picture about what constitutes food security. We discussed how food securi…
Milking economies: Multispecies entanglements in the infant formula industry
In 2016 the Chinese infant formula company Feihe International signed a deal with the Canadian Dairy Commission (CDC) to process Canadian cows' and goats' milk for infant formula export to China. Our purpose in this paper is to understand how this deal - and the new Feihe formula factory located in Kingston, Canada - is underpinned by a series of multispecies entanglements across cow, human and goat mothers in China and Canada. To do so, we analy…
Strength, mobility, and variety: Central discourses which undermine tourism's ability to subvert broader gender orders in Botswana
Tourism is often identified for its subversive potential, its ability to change the behaviours of locals (whether positively or negatively). This is certainly the case when authors discuss the feminisation of the industry and how such work exposes women to alternative gender orders (involving gender practices, relations, identities, and roles). Botswana’s National Ecotourism Strategy (NES) made similar presuppositions. Using the dominant and dich…
Masking over ambiguity: Suburban Johannesburg police reservists and the uniform fetish
Using McClintock's theoretical concept ‘fetish’ and Foucault's ‘bio-power’, this article explores what ambiguous perceptions of themselves reservists use the uniform to mask and how these are articulated through difference. Conducting an analysis of discourses using data collected from interviews with 23 suburban Johannesburg reservists, this article finds that the most prevalent ambiguities reservists manage circulate vulnerability and control a…
