It draws on 20 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with climate advocates aged 11 to 29 who have attended (or attempted to attend) unfccc Conferences of the Parties ( cop s). This is about every child’s future: Can Citizens’ Assemblies support the Realisation of Children’s Participation Rights in Environmental Governance
The development of citizens’ assemblies involving children has sparked interest in their potential to support them in accessing their rights as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child ( crc ). In parallel to a citizens’ assembly with the adult population, Ireland held its first Children and Young People’s Assembly on Biodiversity Loss in 2022. Analysing data collated over a two-year period, this paper explores the out…

Prod-Alert 2: Replicating and extending psychiatric restraint open data analysis using logarithmic estimates of reporting trends
Care, management, and statute each mandate restraint-reporting in psychiatric settings in England. PROD-ALERT in this journal ("PA1") correlated log incidence of restraint, log institutional size, and log detention. The period was September 2020 to August 2021. It showed a clear trend among reporters. Restraint correlated with institutional size and use of legal detention. Some large detaining providers reported no restraints per month despite th…
Sustainable circular cities? Analysing urban circular economy policies in Amsterdam, Glasgow, and Copenhagen
Cities play a central role in the circular economy (CE) as they are important centres of production and consumption, responsible for 80% of global GDP. European cities are particularly important due to their position of power in the global economy as major markets, and places of industrial and social innovation. Yet urban CE policies and discourses remain poorly researched and understood. This paper addresses this research gap by analysing and co…
My corona: Listening to children in corona times
Created with twelve Members of Children’s Parliament aged 8–14 across Scotland, The Corona Times Journal was established in March 2020 as Scotland entered a national lockdown in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The children were supported to reflect on their experiences of the pandemic in response to themed journal prompts around life at home, health and wellbeing, education and learning, news and information, and the return to schooling…
Children’s rights impact assessments in times of crisis: Learning from Covid-19
Policy responses to COVID-19 have illuminated how children and young people’s human rights were all too often side-lined by adult concerns. With mounting queries during the first ‘lockdown’ in Scotland (March 2020), the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland asked the Observatory of Children’s Human Rights Scotland to undertake an independent Children’s Rights Impact Assessment of COVID-19 emergency public health measures on children a…
Small and joined in print: Ivan Vladislavić, "Tsafendas's Diary," and Staffrider magazine (1988)
This essay looks to the presence of the publishing “backroom” in the work of South African writer Ivan Vladislavić. Vladislavić was employed by Johannesburg-based Ravan Press as their Social Studies Editor in 1984; his short, overtly anti-realist story, “Tsafendas’s Diary,” was published in Ravan’s flagship magazine Staffrider in 1988 (7 (1)), notably the first issue to which Vladislavić was formally attached as assistant editor. Prior to its app…

Introduction to the symposium: Ivan Vladislavić, writing visual culture, and the globalization of a South African “artworld”
The introduction to this symposium considers South African author and editor Ivan Vladislavić’s engagement with South African visual culture and the significance of this to his emergence as a “world writer”. The symposium opens with an article by Sean O’Toole, which provides a comprehensive biographical context for Vladislavić’s engagement with art and proposes that his oeuvre be understood as a unique form of “creative criticism”. In their artic…

Effects of Intensive Mobile Happiness Reporting in Daily Life
Does intensive focus on happiness change the naturalistic experience of happiness over time? In a 2-week text-messaging experiment, young adult participants ( n = 162) reported their current happiness 1, 3, or 6 times daily. Examination of temporal changes in momentary happiness over time showed no group differences, suggesting little evidence for reactivity overall. However, the effects were moderated by current depressive symptoms and neurotici…
