  • HIV and syphilis in the context of community vulnerability among indigenous people in the Brazilian Amazon

Open Access•Adele Schwartz Benzaken, Meritxell Sabidó et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2017

The large-scale integration of RT in remote areas increased case detection among pregnant women, especially for syphilis, in districts with higher vulnerability. Mobility is an important risk factor, especially in districts with higher vulnerability. Contextually appropriate approaches that address this factor could contribute to the long-term success of HIV and syphilis control programs

Open Access•Cristina Hernando, Meritxell Sabidó et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2017•References: 1

Migrant populations are under-represented in health research. We conducted a community-based qualitative study with the aim to examine the willingness, barriers, facilitators and reasons for participating in longitudinal health research among migrants. In Badalona and Santa Coloma de Gramanet (Barcelona) from May to November 2014, 26 individual interviews and 8 discussion groups were conducted with a convenience sample of 76 migrants born in Colo…

Open Access•Dária Neves, Chong Tan et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2016•References: 21

Screening for Chlamydia trachomatis is not routinely offered to young asymptomatic women in Brazil. This study evaluated the performance, usefulness, and operational suitability of the Digene Hybrid Capture II (HCII) CT-ID DNA-test as an opportunistic screening tool to detect C. trachomatis in the public health system in Manaus, Amazonas State. Women aged 14-25 years who attended primary health care services were interviewed and one cervical spec…

  • Sexual Violence Against Men Who Have Sex with Men in Brazil

Open Access•Meritxell Sabidó, Ligia Regina Sansigolo Kerr et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2015

We estimated the prevalence of sexual violence (SV) experience among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Brazil and identified its associated risk factors. We recruited 3859 MSM through respondent driven sampling. A multivariable hierarchical analysis was performed using an ecological model. The prevalence of having ever experienced SV was 15.9 % (95 % confidence interval [CI] 14.7-17.1). SV experience was independently associated with discriminat…

  • Sexual risk behaviours and barriers to HIV testing among clients of female sex workers in Guatemala

María Lahuerta, Míriam Torrens et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2013

Few interventions have targeted clients of female sex workers in Central America, despite their potential role in HIV/STI prevention. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 clients of female sex workers on attitudes towards prevention of HIV/STIs, barriers to condom use and behaviour towards HIV/STI testing and treatment in Escuintla, Guatemala. Despite high knowledge of condoms as an HIV/STI preventive measure, the decision to use the…

  • Reproductive health and healthcare among sex workers in Escuintla, Guatemala

Carmen Porras, Carmen González Porras et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2008

This study examines understandings of sexual and reproductive health and healthcare, and perceptions of health services among women who regularly or occasionally sell or transact sex in Escuintla, Guatemala. Using an approach informed by grounded theory, 35 individual interviews were analysed. Results suggest that sex workers face multiple forms of vulnerability due to their level of education, economic situation and unequal gender relations. Man…
