The Optimism Ignited by Nature‐Based Solutions
In recent years, a major push to restore oyster reefs has helped to revive the marine environments that were depleted in South Australia. Categorized as “Nature‐based Solutions” (NbS) that foster the return of biodiversity, these efforts have led to pockets of environmental optimism while countering an otherwise gloomy marine health forecast. By focusing on the personnel behind the push for oyster reef restoration, this discussion attends to the …
Evaluative governance for climate action in Australia
Community‐based marine restoration to generate social licence and ecological knowledge for upscaling oyster reef restoration
Community‐led restoration operates at the intersection of ecological feasibility and social acceptability. In the marine realm, restoration is challenging due to gaps in ecological knowledge on how and where to restore lost ecosystems and limited public engagement that provides social licence for restoration. The restoration of lost oyster reefs provides a prime example because these ecosystems have been degraded to functional extinction on many …
The evolution of scientific writing
For at least a century, scientists have been concerned with the need for clear scientific writing. This concern has grown with the advent of the internet allowing for global, interdisciplinary collaboration. In this study, we used R software to analyse over twenty million abstracts from scientific papers in the health and medical fields — tracking changes in the frequency with which different writing components have been used since the 1950s. Thi…
Recentering the role of marine restoration science to bolster community stewardship
The restoration of marine habitats is becoming a primary strategy for managing healthy coastal ecosystems, but initiatives often fail due to conflicts with social or industry activities. Confronting the challenge of expanding marine restoration for the ‘Ocean Decade’, this paper explores the ways that researchers could improve the way Governments and practitioners engage stakeholders with restorations of high socio-ecological and economic value. …
Advancing Government Legitimacy through the Scientific Study of Sentience
The ongoing crises in environment and public health have uncovered an opportunity for innovation. Yet, if we are serious about improving the human and more-than-human natural worlds, societies and institutions need a new mindset. One potential mindset is offered by the emerging science of animal sentience, defined as the capacity to feel emotion, pleasure and pain. The study of sentience has revealed a contradiction at the heart of government leg…
Sparking Creativity in Science Education
World‐class science requires inspiration, so how can we spark creativity in the modern university environment? Creativity does not come automatically: in the modern age, factors from electronic devices to time pressure can stifle creative thought. Yet, to solve the major problems of the future, it will be essential to stimulate creativity in scientific research and teaching. Here, we bring together insights from the literature to offer ways to cu…

Adaptive Responses of Marine Gastropods to Heatwaves
The first North American mammoths
Preliminary study of the geologic framework of the Colorado Plateau-Middle Rio Grande Basin transition, New Mexico
Recent interest in the availability of deep groundwater resources along the structurally complicated transition between the Colorado Plateau and the Rio Grande rift in north-central New Mexico, resulted in the development of groundwater-flow models that suggested an impact on the Middle Rio Grande Basin (MRGB, also known as the Albuquerque Basin) from long-term pumping of wells that would exploit pre-Cenozoic aquifer units (Melis, 2009).Refinemen…
Geologic map of the Albuquerque - Rio Rancho metropolitan area and vicinity, Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, New Mexico
This is the most comprehensive compilation of the geology of the Albuquerque Basin to be printed in 30 years. The area covered by this new compilation, though not as large as the earlier map, is presented at a scale nearly four times the detail (1:50,000 scale compared to the earlier map's 1:190,000 scale). This new geologic map is a compilation of sixteen 7.5-min USGS quadrangle maps and encompasses an area from Tijeras Arroyo on the south to Sa…
Geologic map of the La Joya NW quadrangle, Socorro County, New Mexico
This draft geologic map is preliminary and will undergo revision. It was produced from either scans of hand-drafted originals or from digitally drafted original maps and figures using a wide variety of software, and is currently in cartographic production. It is being distributed in this draft form as part of the bureau's Open-file map series (OFGM), due to high

Geologic map of the La Joya 7.5-minute quadrangle, Socorro County, New Mexico
Field logs of boreholes for nested piezometers, Tome site, Valencia County, New Mexico
Lithologic descriptions were made by visual examination of mud-rotary cuttings taken from the well head at IO-foot intervals (Table5).Drilling methods prevent a complete evaluation of the finer grained fraction (commonly fine-grained sand and silt) that tends to be held in suspension by the drilling fluids.Sieve testing was not conducted.Lithologic descriptions are based on the following criteria:-1. Major textural class; 2. Estimated grain-size …
