Transnacionalizacija odozdo: Povratnici i useljenici hrvatskoga podrijetla između performativnosti pripadanja i društvenoga djelovanja
Over the past fifteen years, return migration has become a fertile research area in migration studies, in particular in sociology and cultural anthropology. Via transnational optics, the concept of return has been redefined as a fluid, multidirectional and reversible movement between the social space of the country of origin and the country of immigration (or a third country). Return has also been expanded by the idea of virtual, short-term, temp…
Meanings and Uses of Material Cultural Heritage in the Town of Hvar
Poteškoće i izazovi prekomjernog turizma u gradu Hvaru
Uz pomoć sintagme “prekomjerni turizam” u radu se analiziraju percepcije lokalnoga stanovništva o negativnom utjecaju turizma u specifičnom prostornom, temporalnom, demografskom i socio-ekonomskom kontekstu grada Hvara. Pokazuje se da su negativni efekti turizma u gradu slični onima u drugim mjestima izloženima prekomjernom turizmu no, također, da lokalni kontekst (veličina i prostor grada, monokultura turizma i njegova sezonalnost, angažiranost …
Croatian Migrant Families: Local Incorporation, Culture, and Identity
So far, Croatian migrant families have been predominantly studied within the scope of theoretical questions oriented toward ethnicity and their role as the guardians of ethnic/national identity. Going beyond the ethnic lens of those studies, the article focuses on an exploration of family structures and the social functioning of wider kinship networks in the migration context as well as an understanding of how migrants conceive of ethnic/national…
Islanders’ Heterogenous Temporalities: The Case of the Town of Hvar
This paper revisits the cultural stereotype of a sharp binary division between “summer” and “winter” temporalities in an island town in Croatia (Hvar). It highlights the existence of parallel and competing temporalities that generate heterogeneous social and individual rhythms. The overarching rhythm of summer tourism, which divides the year into “summer” (roughly between May and October) and “winter” (roughly between November and April), conceal…

European anthropology: Transnationality and reflexivity within a shared horizon of meaning
Why is European anthropology still a controversial concept? In this commentary, I propose to locate European anthropology in its epistemology, by which is primarily meant the discipline's reflexivity, and in its transnational setting which requires not only communication across national borders but also equality in exchanges among European anthropologists. Also, I argue that European anthropology is to be found in the common horizon of meaning th…

The article analyses small and medium scale entrepreneurial activities of foreign nationals in Zagreb, the Croatian capital. Migrants' businesses in the hospitality sector are analysed against the background of opportunities and constraints off ered by the specifi c local and national context, and in relation to the city's attempts to reposition itself within international networks of power. The authors argue that the city's ambiguous position -o…
Integriranje kulturne antropologije u kliničku praksu. Kulturna značenja i odnos liječnika i pacijenta
Zagreb očima međunarodnih migranata: Značenja, potencijali i (re)skaliranja grada
The Security-scape and the (In)Visibility of Refugees: Managing Refugee Flow through Croatia
The article analyses certain aspects of the exceptional migration process unfolding in Europe from the middle of September to the beginning of November, 2015. It focuses on analysis of managing that migration in Croatia through the presentation of the functioning of the reception (and transit) centre at Opatovac. A qualitative ethnographic and anthropological research approach has been applied. The ethnographic perspective offers a complex view o…
Durable Solutions,” Transnationalism, and Homemaking among Croatian and Bosnian Former Refugees
This article proposes that the UNHCR-supported “durable solution” programs for former refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina and from Croatia were at odds with the actual exilic experiences of former refugees. It introduce homemaking as an essential aspect of a successful durable solution and proposes supplementing the usual ethno-politicized understandings of home in the specific context with analyses of the process of homemaking at different scal…
