    In Assessing the individual’s knowledge involves sampling in areas of (1) the class of items and (2) the class of responses.     The implication is often made that that segment of our population called “culturally deprived” is a homogeneous group. The contention in this paper is that this implication is psychologically inaccurate. Analyses of the scores of 25 Negro children given the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistics reveal sufficient variability to cast doubt on the utility of the concept. Implications for education are discussed
