Walking With Dragons
This article discusses the "Dragon Walk" project, a series of guided walks and participatory art-based community gatherings purposefully located in one of Vancouver's major redevelopment landscapes, the Cambie Corridor. Adopting a "cats' cradle" approach to thinking and writing, I follow Dragon Walk's suggestion that we look at urban change from a circuitous route-one informed by performative, imaginative, and sensuous practices. I argue that by …
My grandmother was a tailor
In this article I evoke key elements of my Italian grandmother's life-her knitwear workshop, her practice as a tailor, and her sensorial engagements with bodies and dress-and interweave them with reflections from my fieldwork in Milan, Italy. Family stories about my grandmother are steeped in things that have disappeared-objects and materialities, forms of women's work, and familiar places in a changing city. Loss and absence are here a particula…
A Tale of Two Ethnographers
Sensate memory
This issue brings together 10 anthropologists who investigate the potential of multimodality and the role of sensing, as situated social practice, in the complex working of memory. Through video, images, texts and sound—and through collage, installations, embroidery, and drawing—we invite the audience of Multimodality & Society to consider: What are some of the complex relationships between memory and the senses? How does multimodality help us ap…
Echoing memories
Using images, video, and text, I weave together two walks and several conversations on the senses, migration, and memory. I focus on echoes or resonances as a method to attend to the relation between remembering, sensory emplacement and urban materialities. Using comments from my interlocutors who migrated to Metro Vancouver from outside Canada, as well as autobiographical reflections on sensate memories in urban landscapes, I investigate how for…
