We’ll be able to hang out when there’s no coronavirus. On safe spaces in Polish pandemic playscapes
The outburst of the coronavirus pandemic in Poland has led to specific measures related to covid, which affected unequally different age groups. Children were presented as “spreaders” of the disease, and a threat to the societies’ safety. Such fears led to new disciplining practices, such as prohibiting children from leaving the house without adult’s supervision during the first wave of pandemic in Poland. In the consequence of those special meas…

Czy można o tym porozmawiać z dzieckiem? Wrodzony przerost nadnerczy a etyka badań z dziećmi i o dzieciach
In my text, I will discuss the ethical and methodological issues of ethnographic research with children who have a rare genetic disease: congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). It is associated with a deficiency of enzymes involved in cortisol production, which in turn leads to increased production of androgens, potentially resulting in the virilization of genitalia. Individuals with CAH often need lifelong medication, and the absence of such treat…
Should I Buy Her a Doll'? Motherhood and Turner Syndrome in Poland
Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic condition that affects only girls and women, leading to health issues including infertility. Patients usually require recombinant growth hormone, and sex hormone therapy. Based on our anthropological research in Poland, we posit questions regarding the management of societal expectations by female parents regarding the femininity of their daughters, especially within the context of infertility. We query: Is it po…

The article aims to examine the meanings that Polish children (age 8–11) attribute to computers, television, or smartphones, in the context of health. Basing on childhood studies literature and the concept of healthscape I show how children include electronic media, as material and symbolic objects, in health discourses. The Hormone of Growth and Hope. The Case of Turner Syndrome
How the Political Becomes Private
The Polish debate on in vitro fertilization (IVF) is extremely heated and highly politicized. The hierarchs of the Catholic vehemently oppose the use of IVF. In this text, I present the Church's approach to IVF. Basing on the documentary film, Three Conversations about Life, and ethnographic research, as well as an analysis of Vatican documents and official statements of Polish bishops, I show how the positions of clergy might influence private l…
Jak zaczęła się twoja historia”. Nowe technologie reprodukcyjne i nowe formy stygmatyzacji

A very strong voice in the debate has Catholic Church, whic…
Frozen children and despairing embryos in the ‘new’ post-communist state
In vitro fertilization (IVF) technology has been in use in Poland for over 25 years with success and social approval, but it is still not regulated under Polish law. The current debate over different non-medical aspects of reproductive technologies in Poland is extremely heated and highly politicized. Politicians on the right, Catholic clergy and some journalists use very radical language and criticize IVF as a technique that plays with the lives…
Between Advanced Medical Technology and Prayer
In Poland, invitro fertilisation technology (IVF) has been in use for over 25 years, garnering success and social approval. However, in 2007, a heated debate erupted on the moral, legal and economic aspects of IVF. A growing chorus of emphatic Catholic voices calls for IVF to be banned. This paper focuses on 'naprotechnology', a new actor and a fresh card in Poland's IVF debate. This method of treating infertility in accordance with the teachings…

"The creation of "monsters
In Poland, there is a campaign to criminalise in vitro fertilization, led by the Catholic church. This article explores how this campaign makes “monsters” of IVF children in its discourse, that is, embodiments of “the other” in the sense of Frankenstein's monster. Basing the analysis primarily on Catholic mass media publications, the article investigates the discursive strategies employed to oppose IVF, most notably by the Catholic clergy and act…

However, in 2007 a vehement debate on moral, legal, and economic aspects of applying this technology of assisted procreation broke out. This was related to the gaps in Polish legislation lacking the regulations concerning the IVF, especially concerning the coverage by the public health-care system. Moreover, the Catholic voic…
