Childhood trauma, adolescent risk behaviours and cardiovascular health indices in the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort
BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma has been associated with increased risk of substance use and poor sleep, with these factors linked to subsequent poor cardiovascular health. However, there has been little longitudinal research exploring these associations in adolescence, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To address this, we investigated longitudinal pathways from trauma to risk behaviours and cardiovascular health indices among …
Lessons from 13 years of accelerometry measurements in five Brazilian cohorts
This study describes key methodological decisions and their justifications for accelerometer data collection, processing, and cleaning/analysis in Pelotas (Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil) cohorts, exemplifying how research using sensor monitors could be carried out in a middle-income country context. This is a descriptive methodological study using raw accelerometer data from five Brazilian population-based cohorts with 32,963 individuals. Data …
Exploring the relationship between ultra-processed food consumption and gut microbiota at school age in a Brazilian birth cohort
Dietary patterns significantly impact health outcomes and gut microbiota composition. However, longitudinal studies associating ultra-processed food consumption with gut microbiota composition, especially among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries, are lacking. This study aimed to explore this association using data collected from 364 participants at ages 6, 11, and 12 years from the 2004 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort. Microbiota data …
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the lives of the 2004 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort adolescents
Insights into the experiences of adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic are crucial for understanding the extent of their impact and guiding future responses to similar challenging events. This study aims to describe the effects of the pandemic on different aspects of adolescents' lives and examine how they varied according to socioeconomic, family, and individual characteristics. We used data from a subsample of the 2004 Pelotas (Brazil) birth…
Changes of adolescent sleep patterns during the Covid-19 pandemic
OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has raised numerous concerns regarding its effects on individuals' health and lifestyle. We aim to analyze potential changes in adolescent sleep patterns from before and during the pandemic and identify specific predictors of changes. METHODS: A subgroup of adolescents from a population-based birth cohort from Pelotas, Brazil, was assessed pre-pandemic (T1, November-2019 to March-2020) and peri-pandemic (T2, Augus…
Fatores associados a distúrbios do sono em estudantes universitários
O objetivo foi investigar distúrbios do sono e fatores sociodemográficos e comportamentais associados. Foi realizado um censo com universitários. Perguntas extraídas do Munich Chronotype Questionnaire investigaram: duração insuficiente do sono ( 30 minutos), baixa qualidade autopercebida, despertares noturnos (involuntários, no meio da noite) e sonolência diurna (dificuldade de concentração). Variáveis independentes englobaram características soc…
Repeated high blood pressure at 6 and 11 years at the Pelotas 2004 birth cohort study
Prevalence of repeated high SBP, DBP, and SDBP were within the expected distribution at the population level. Nonetheless, gestational diabetes mellitus, obesity, family history of hypertension, and prematurity increased the risk of repeated high blood pressure measured at two occasions 5 years apart
Population-based study in a rural area
OBJECTIVE: To describe the planning, sampling, operational aspects of the field, and the sample obtained during a research conducted in a rural area, specifying and discussing the main logistical difficulties unique to these places and the solutions adopted. METHODS: We carried out a population-based, cross-sectional survey between January and June 2016, with a representative sample of the population aged 18 years or over living in the rural area…
General and abdominal obesity in adults living in a rural area in Southern Brazil
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of general and abdominal obesity and the concomitant presence of both outcomes and their determinants among adults living in a rural area. METHODS: This cross-sectional, population-based study was carried out in a medium-sized city in the southern region of Brazil. We evaluated three outcomes: general obesity (body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2), abdominal obesity (waist circumference ≥ 102 cm and ≥ 88 cm in men and …
Quality of life in adults from a rural area in Southern Brazil
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the quality of life and its determinants in a population living in a rural area. METHODS: This is a population-based, cross-sectional study with individuals aged 18 years or over from the rural area of Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We evaluated quality of life using the WHOQOL-BREF, which has four domains (physical, psychological, social relations, and environment) and two questions: overall quality of life an…
Dopamine receptor D4 allele distribution in Amerindians
The DRD4 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) allele distribution of 172 Guarani (Kaiowá and Ñandeva subgroups) and Kaingang Brazilian Amerindians is reported. These results are integrated with those previously obtained for this ethnic group. Allele frequencies for the three populations are within the interval observed for 15 other Native American populations and show intermediate values between those observed in Amazonia and Patagonia. Signi…
Autosomal STR Analyses in Native Amazonian Tribes Suggest a Population Structure Driven by Isolation by Distance
Eleven short tandem repeat loci (CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, TH01, and TPOX) were investigated in 232 individuals from 6 Amazonian native tribes (Tiriyó, Waiãpi, Zoé, Urubu-Kaapor, Awa-Guajá, and Parakanã). We added the new data to a database that included five previously typed native populations from the same area (Wai Wai, Gavião, Zoró, Suruí, and Xavante). The results presented here concern this …
