Developing epidemiological research in response to an oil spill disaster in Brazil
The oil spill disaster that affected 11 states along the Brazilian coast in 2019/2020 is considered the largest in Brazil’s history, with approximately five tons of oil residues collected. Small-scale fishers (SSF) were the group at greatest risk of exposure. This article describes the study design and questionnaire validation of the first epidemiological study in Brazil aimed at investigating the potential health effects of this disaster on SSF.…
Monitoring Neighborhood Concentrations of PM 2.5 and Black Carbon
Monitoring networks are commonly designed to measure the air quality of regional air sheds and may not be representative of neighborhood air quality. This study presents data collected in a neighborhood in Washington, District of Columbia (DC), through a partnership between academics, residents, and a grassroots organization. It contributes to a growing body of studies that demonstrate the extent of differences in air quality experienced by some …
Derramamento de óleo bruto na costa brasileira em 2019
A crude oil spill was first identified on the Brazilian coast on August 30, 2019, and has reached 4,334 km of coastline in 11 states of the Northeast and Southeast, with 120 municipalities (counties) and 724 locations, as of November 22, 2019 1 . The disaster is considered the worst oil spill in Brazil's history and one of the largest on record in the world. The sequence of the phenomena cannot be attributed to chance, rather expressing probabili…
Combining Community Engagement and Scientific Approaches in Next-Generation Monitor Siting
Air pollution continues to be a global public health threat, and the expanding availability of small, low-cost air sensors has led to increased interest in both personal and crowd-sourced air monitoring. However, to date, few low-cost air monitoring networks have been developed with the scientific rigor or continuity needed to conduct public health surveillance and inform policy. In Imperial County, California, near the U.S./Mexico border, we use…
Assessing Exposures to Household Air Pollution in Public Health Research and Program Evaluation
Exposure to smoke from the use of solid fuels and inefficient stoves for cooking and heating is responsible for approximately 4 million premature deaths yearly. As increasing investments are made to tackle this important public health issue, there is a need for identifying and providing guidance on best practices for exposure and stove performance monitoring, particularly for public health research and evaluation studies. This paper, which builds…
Biomarkers of secondhand smoke exposure in automobiles
Brief SHS exposure in cars resulted in substantial increases in levels of tobacco biomarkers in non-smokers. For optimal characterisation of SHS exposure, tobacco biomarkers should be measured within 4-8 h post-exposure. Additional studies are needed to better describe the relationship between tobacco biomarkers and environmental markers of SHS
