Utility of sentinel surveillance as an early warning system for emerging pathogens in a low-resource setting: Correlations of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and Covid-19 trends between sentinel and passiv…
The representativeness and timeliness of sentinel surveillance for endemic and emerging arboviral and respiratory diseases in low-resource settings are understudied. We compared laboratory-confirmed epidemic dengue, non-epidemic dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and COVID-19 (pre-Omicron and Omicron periods) cases reported in Puerto Rico’s Sentinel Enhanced Dengue Surveillance System (SEDSS) with island-wide trends reported by the Department of Health’s…
Use of minimally invasive tissue sampling to determine the contribution of diarrheal diseases to under-five mortality and associated co-morbidities and co-infections in children with fatal diarrheal d…
Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing child mortality to Shigella /EIEC (14.0%), ST-ETEC (12.4%), rotavirus (26.4%), and adenovirus (non-40/41: 19.0%; 40/41: 5.0%). These pathogens were frequently identified as co-infections. Diarrheal disease accounted for a substantial share of child deaths across CHAMPS sites. Reducing mortality will require preventing diarrhea and addressing key contributors such as malnutrition and HIV
Contribution of malnutrition to infant and child deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia
Introduction Malnutrition contributes to 45% of all childhood deaths globally, but these modelled estimates lack direct measurements in countries with high malnutrition and under-5 mortality rates. We investigated malnutrition’s role in infant and child deaths in the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network. Methods We analysed CHAMPS data from seven sites (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and…
Identifying delays in healthcare seeking and provision: The Three Delays-in-Healthcare and mortality among infants and children aged 1–59 months
Delays in illness recognition, healthcare seeking, and in the provision of appropriate clinical care are common in resource-limited settings. Our objective was to determine the frequency of delays in the “Three Delays-in-Healthcare”, and factors associated with delays, among deceased infants and children in seven countries with high childhood mortality. We conducted a retrospective, descriptive study using data from verbal autopsies and medical r…
Factors Influencing Knowledge of Covid-19 Prevention in Eastern Ethiopia
This study examined coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prevention knowledge among community residents in Eastern Ethiopia to support public health interventions and vaccination coverage. A cross-sectional survey in August-September 2021 recruited 880 participants from households in a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Harari and Oromia, Ethiopia. Participants were randomly selected and interviewed in person using tablets and a …
Effectiveness of Sars-CoV-2 vaccines against Omicron infection and severe events: A systematic review and meta-analysis of test-negative design studies
Causes of death identified in neonates enrolled through Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS), December 2016 –December 2021
Each year, 2.4 million children die within their first month of life. Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) established in 7 countries aims to generate accurate data on why such deaths occur and inform prevention strategies. Neonatal deaths that occurred between December 2016 and December 2021 were investigated with MITS within 24–72 hours of death. Testing included blood, cerebrospinal fluid and lung cultures, multi-pathoge…
Knowledge of Covid-19 symptoms, transmission, and prevention: Evidence from health and demographic surveillance in Southern Mozambique
Understanding community members’ knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and prevention is essential for directing public health interventions to reduce disease spread and improve vaccination coverage. Here, we describe knowledge of COVID-19 transmission, prevention, and symptoms among community residents in Mozambique. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 33,087 households in a Health and Demographic Surveillance System in Manhiça, Mozambiqu…
Household hardships and responses to Covid-19 pandemic-related shocks in Eastern Ethiopia
Our results identify characteristics of groups at-risk for household hardships during the pandemic; these findings may inform efforts to mitigate the consequences of COVID-19 and future disease outbreaks
Associations between household environmental factors and immature mosquito abundance in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala
We found evidence that proximity to other houses and paved roads was associated with greater abundance of larvae and pupae. Understanding risk factors such as these can allow for improved targeting of surveillance and vector control measures in areas considered at higher risk for arbovirus transmission
Changes in socio-economic status and lipoproteins in Chilean adolescents: A 16-year longitudinal study
Objective The present longitudinal study assessed whether changes in socio-economic status (SES) from infancy to adolescence were associated with plasma lipoprotein concentrations in adolescence, of which low HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and high LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), TAG and total cholesterol (TC) concentrations are associated with higher cardiovascular risk. Design SES, assessed using the modified Graffar Index, was calculated at 1, 5, 10 and 16 …
