Differential preservation of entombments from historic wall vaults at Cypress Grove Cemetery #1, New Orleans, LA
Exploring archaeological evidence for historic smallpox epidemics in the Americas
Establishing a minimum number of individuals during a salvage recovery of a historic New Orleans cemetery
Reconciling Historic Hospital Records with a Contemporary Skeletal Data Set: Exploring the Osteological Paradox from a Historical Bioarchaeology Perspective
Embodied Poverty: Bioarchaeology of the Brentwood Poor Farm, Brentwood, New Hampshire (1841-1868)
Through a commingled, fragmentary assemblage of skeletal remains (MNI = 9) recovered from a 1999 salvage excavation, this article explores the lives and deaths of individuals interred at the Brentwood Poor Farm, Brentwood, New Hampshire (1841-1868). This work demonstrates that bioarchaeological analyses of smaller samples can provide nuanced accounts of marginalization and institutionalization even with scant historical records. The skeletal anal…
Postmortem Examination as Necroviolence at Charity Hospital Cemetery No. 2 (1847–1929)
Stress, health and demography at Charity Hospital Cemetery #2 (AD1847-1929)
The physiological toll of poverty-from inadequate nutrition, higher disease loads, dangerous and taxing occupations, to limited health care-constitutes a form of structural violence. This violence is often embodied on skeletal tissues as signs of systemic biological stress. Here, we explore the skeletal manifestations of systemic biological stress on the bodies of those interred at Charity Hospital, an indigent hospital, in New Orleans, Louisiana…
