Fostering children’s ecological imagination with augmented storying
In this study we investigated how augmented storying fosters children’s ecological imagination. Augmented storying couples culturally-based nature stories embedded in augmented storytelling technology with children’s own mobile and multimodal storying activities outdoors in local ecologies. The study took place during a four-month, cross-curricular project in a Finnish elementary school and its neighborhood. Results reveal affective, embodied, se…
Moral imagining in student-teacher relationships in alternative programs
Inviting social futures, imagining unicorns
The Story of LCHC: A Polyphonic Autobiography is a hybrid narrative of the history of the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition (LCHC) as told by a collective of authors. It includes five sections and 15 chapters (see https://lchcautobio.ucsd.edu). To date, “Section 6: The Future” remains undrafted. In this commentary, I interpret the undrafted section to reflect an open invitation to various individuals and collectives to build with the work…
Students' Perspectives on Engagement, Learning, and Pedagogy
Student engagement in higher education has been studied from different theoretical perspectives and in different countries. Current issues include both concerns regarding students' attitudes and ambivalence and, in addition, the definition of the concept of student engagement and how various pedagogical approaches may contribute to contrasting definitions. The present study thematically analyzed self-evaluations of 46 students attending two pedag…

Regulating the child in early childhood education
This article contributes to the literature in critical special education by examining the perspectives of early childhood educators on inclusion and inclusive education. Six early childhood educators were interviewed, and the interview transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis informed by Derridean deconstruction. Themes were identified across the interviews regarding the roles and relationships between educators, families, and children l…

Spaces of Difference
Drawing upon the concept of thirdspace (Soja 1996 Soja, Edward W. 1996. Thirdspace: Journeys to Los Angeles and other Real-and-Imagined Places, Oxford: Blackwell. [Google Scholar]), this article extends sociocultural theorizations of space in relation to alternative educational programs: programs designed to re-engage youth who have been pushed out of mainstream schools. Snapshots of educational programs, provided by ethnographic research gathere…

Who's/whose at risk? answerability and the critical possibilities of classroom discourse
Our aim in this article is twofold. First, we challenge the essentialized notion of adolescents and young people as perpetually driven to resist the authority of adults. At the same time, we disrupt linguistic conceptions of adolescent discourse, along with the discourse of youth at risk, by analyzing a transcript of classroom discourse that reflects an exchange between a highly regarded and well liked preservice teacher and his students. This re…
Constructing and Reconstructing Teaching Roles
Over the last several decades, a shift in thinking has brought to the fore the power of language as more than simply a method of expression. Indeed, language is a constituent part of social practices and social identity. For teachers, both pre-service and in-service, teaching roles are often represented through surface and generative metaphors, the latter of which are tacit. In order to study the way in which language, and in particular metaphor,…

Spatializing Sociocultural Research
Patrolling the Borders of Otherness
We look across two studies, conducted within the current new managerialist policy context in Australia, which capture the construction of social spaces mediated through the nexus of material, activity, and discursive space. The focus of the first study is the negotiation of identities for a second language (Indonesian) teacher and his Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The social space of their classroom is carnivalized, parodying traditiona…

Health Care “As Usual”
The recent shift to a “positive psychological” approach that emphasizes a “health model,” rather than a “disease model,” in mental health discourses is intended both to reduce the stigma around mental health issues and to enable people to play a role in monitoring their own mental health. As a component of a larger study on access to and utilization of mental health services by immigrant women, and a partial reflection of the current ideological …
Bilingual Intertextuality
Based on sociocultural theory, this article examines two activities constituted by a parent and child as jointly constructed bi-literacy practices. Bi-literacy practices enable the parent and child to co-construct conceptual meanings and sense across two languages. Concept development in young children begins with meaning in one language and over time develops into multiple nuanced sense in two languages; a process that reflects a developing syst…

Locating Social and Emotional Learning in Schooled Environments
This article contributes to the emerging literature on social and emotional learning (SEL) from a Vygotskian perspective. A critical perspective on SEL in the context of schooling in the United States situates current interest in SEL programs. Vygotsky's foundational work from the 1920s and 1930s is used to clarify learning as unified, and the concept of feeling is elaborated with literature relevant to learning in school environments and across …
