Conflicting identities and labour market outcomes of minorities
Immigrant Youth Adaptation and Risk Involvement
Immigration is challenging for youth as it requires reorganization of their developmental system and can increase their vulnerability to risk factors. Adaptation processes may be affected further by the cultural context in which they take place. This study explored immigration and adaptation experiences among youth at risk, who had immigrated to Israel from France and from the Former Soviet Union (FSU), and the impact of these experiences on the …
Religiosity and labour market attainments of muslim-arab women in Israel
The effects of Islamization on Muslim-Christian relations within Israel’s Arab community before and after the ‘Arab Spring’
This article examines the effects of Islamisation processes among Israeli Muslim Arabs on their intercommunal relations with Christian Arabs before and after the ‘Arab Spring’, based on 45 in-depth interviews held prior to and after this momentous event. The findings show the complex role played by Islamisation in Muslim-Christian relations, causing tensions and distancing at times while promoting intercommunal cooperation on other instances. The…
Arab integration in new and established mixed cities in Israel
The segregation or integration of minority groups is a core issue in contemporary urban fabrics. The literature tends to highlight the difference between ethnic groups while diversity within them receives less attention. This study addresses such differences by looking at Arab residents of ethnically mixed Israeli cities. Specifically, it highlights religious affiliation and community standing (in terms of being an old/new city) by comparing thre…
Place Identity Among Native Minorities
This study addresses place identity among native minorities by focusing on the Arabs in Israel. It follows a recent trend in geography—the environmental-psychology approach to place identity—which focuses on the identity of individuals rather than the identity of places commonly emphasized in human geography. The study draws on mixed methods: 25 in-depth interviews with residents of Arab localities, in addition to questionnaires administered to b…
Self-in-Field Action Research in Natural Spaces of Encounter
The goal of this paper is to examine the role of participatory action research (PAR) in improving relationships in “natural spaces of encounter” where members of conflicting groups meet and interact. It describes and analyzes a project, “the Academic Puzzle,” that fosters organization-wide change in relations between Jewish and Arab students at a College in Israel. The project consists of 16 programs, all initiatives by College faculty, administr…
Exposure to the majority social space and residential place identity among minorities
Contemporary urban fabrics are characterized by ethnic diversity in which considerable portions of minority groups reside in ethnic enclaves. These groups are exposed to the majority populations to different extents in various arenas. The current study addresses the association between exposure to the majority and identification with the ethnic residential environment. It examines this question among Arabs in Israel, who live mostly in distinct e…
The social space of Arab residents of mixed Israeli cities
This study examines social integration of ethnic groups using socio-spatial lifestyle approach as related to Arab residents of mixed Israeli cities. Inter-ethnic relations in mixed cities are a central theme in geo-spatial research, that until recently focuses primarily on residential segregation, assuming its association with social integration. Recent studies uncover more complex realities as individual choices affect movement in space and soci…

This period is characterized by significant ideological and socio-economic changes, with Islamization being particularly evident.
