We live, it seems, in an age of preparedness. From risk calculations to scenario planning, experts engage in anticipatory governance, bringing the future into the present as a site of intervention, discipline and subject-formation. However, in my ethnographic research in Japan and elsewhere, disaster preparedness educators – city officials, non-profit organisations and community leaders educating lay citizens about preparedness – lament that most…

  • Imperialist Multispecies Aspirations

    C Watanabe•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Religion…•2024

Humanities and social science scholars have recently turned their attention to the embeddedness of microbes in human life as a potential way to decentre the human and thereby decolonise assumptions about the human conquest of the natural world. In this article, I argue that, before such claims can be made, careful historical, regional, and ethnographic analyses of human-microbe relations are needed. My case study of a Japanese sustainable develop…

Many ethnographers feel the pressure to suspend familial and professional ties to separate "the field" from "home" for prolonged periods. Since 2019, we have been developing the concept of "patchwork ethnography" to spotlight how ethnographers conduct fieldwork amid intersecting personal and professional responsibilities. We interrogate how researchers' personal lives impact the process of knowledge production, showcase the innovations that have …

  • Everything is Patchwork! A Conversation about Methodological Experimentation with Patchwork Ethnography

    Open Access•Gökçe Günel, C Watanabe et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Studies•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This article collectively discusses creative feminist approaches to ethnographic methods developed in response to challenging social, personal, environmental, and temporal conditions and pressures. Patchwork Ethnography, developed by Gökçe Günel, Saiba Varma and Chika Watanabe, recognises mundane pressures, and works with insights and experiences that emerge not only from doing research, but from what happens around the edges. By rendering the ma…

  • Instrumental Culturalism

    Open Access•C Watanabe•ARTICLE•TRaNS Trans -Regional and…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 18

As ‘emerging donors' push alternative paradigms of development cooperation ‘beyond aid' onto the global agenda, some scholars discuss those from Asia as presenting culturally specific approaches. These observations echo the claims that aid practitioners and policy makers themselves make about, for example, Japanese forms of development. In this article, I caution against scholars repeating these culturally essentialising arguments that promote ce…
