Health and Human Development
Living a long and healthy life is a universal human aspiration. In fact, in many parts of the world, life expectancies have increased dramatically, primarily due to great progress in the treatment and prevention of disease. This necessary focus on disease has not been accompanied, however, by a corresponding focus on health. Fortunately, there is growing evidence that this is changing. Driving this change is an apparent convergence of theoretical…
Occupational Identity
A multi‐dimensional measure of vocational identity status
Establishing a worker identity is among the most central aspects of the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Despite its importance, few measures with acceptable psychometric and conceptual characteristics exist to assess vocational identity statuses. This study reports the development and evaluation of the Vocational Identity Status Assessment (VISA), which is derived from established conceptual models and includes career exploration, commi…

Counseling Psychologists and Schools
The articles in this major contribution on counseling psychology in schools demonstrate that developmental-contextualism is a metatheoretical framework that is relevant and useful for the work of counseling psychologists. The actual utility of the framework depends on the user’s having a clear understanding of its basic constructs and underlying assumptions, as well as avoiding some common misconceptions. Counseling psychologists are urged to acq…
Vocational Preferences of Early Adolescents
The timing of early vocational preferences was compared in a sample of young adolescents from former East Germany and from West Germany. Because of German unification in 1990, and the attendant massive sociocultural changes, such a sample offers a unique opportunity to examine the joint influence of development and context on key transitions and on the accomplishment of developmental tasks. Results suggested that, as the memory of the restrictive…
Patterns of Short-Term Changes in Individuals' Work Values
To examine the magnitude and nature of short-term fluctuations in work values, seven college students (five females, two males) completed the Work Values Inventory (Super, 1970) daily for approximately 100 days. Each individual's scale scores were factor analyzed separately to identify the number and nature of factors that accounted for the day-to-day variability manifested in that person's scores. Results indicated that intra-individual variabil…
The Influence of the Family on Vocational Development
In accord with the growing interest in work and the family, this paper critically examines the issue of the family of orientation's impact on vocational development. First, limitations of the literature on vocational development and the family are discussed, specifically the failure to consider (a) vocational development, (b) the family as a functioning whole, and (c) familial and vocational changes over time. Second, the literature is viewed acc…

Feasibility of an Automated Intake Procedure for Human Services Workers
A substantial proportion of time and effort of human services personnel is being devoted to various kinds of intake procedures. The utilization of sophisticated information-processing technology offers an opportunity not only for improving the product of such intake procedures but also for using more efficiently and appropriately human resources in the human services professions. An automated intake procedure is conceptualized as a tool for syste…
Self-Disclosure and Interpersonal Trust
The Rotter Interpersonal Trust Scale and a Self-disclosure Questionnaire developed by the junior author were administered to two samples of college students. In the first sample ( N = 54) self-disclosure to a specific target person was related to Interpersonal Trust; in the second sample ( N = 52) it was attempted to tap a more generalized concept of revealingness and to relate it to Interpersonal Trust. Failure to demonstrate the hypothesized re…
Behavioral Measurement of Self-Disclosure
Recent validiry studies of Jourard's Self-Disclosure Inventory (SDI) have failed to confirm the validity of this instrument (Himelstein & Lubin, 1965; Pederson & Breglio, 1968). These studies have suggested, however, that reported self-disclosure and actual self-disclosure may reflect behaviors sufficiently different to necessitate diffetent measurement operations. Furthermore, it appears that the measurement of actual disclosing behavior must ac…
