  • Curiosity and controversy: The emerging field of regenerative agriculture in Norway

Open Access•Elin Helena Wyller Engkvist, Karen Lykke Syse•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning E Nature…•2026

This article explores the knowledge controversies within regenerative agriculture in Norway, and how farmers navigate this emerging field based on interviews and participant observations throughout four growing seasons. We employ Thomas Kuhn's classic concept of paradigm shifts and Thomas Gieryn's cultural boundaries of science to analyse the agronomic foundations farmers challenge, the scientific fields they combine, and the social barriers they…

  • From ritual loss of life to loss of living rituals: On judicialization of slaughter and denial of animal death

    Open Access•Kristian Bjorkdahl, Karen Lykke Syse•ARTICLE•Food Culture & Society•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The increasingly industrial character of meat production has entailed significant changes to the relations we have to the animals we eat. In this article we first describe some of the practices and rituals that characterized slaughter in Norway up to the first decades of the 20th century. In this period, Norwegians drew on rituals to make the killing of an animal meaningful and acceptable. Then, by exploring the original impetus toward “humane sl…

  • Welfare Washing: Disseminating Disinformation in Meat Marketing

Kristian Bjorkdahl, Karen Lykke Syse et al.•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

In this article, our starting point is that people who are plagued by the so-called meat paradox must find ways of making meat consumption safe from the realities of meat production. They do this by way of various mechanisms of denial, which obfuscate contemporary industrial meat production. We focus on how advertisements become one notable vehicle of such denial, and select three examples for close reading. Focusing on the rhetorical techniques …

  • Stumbling over Animals in the Landscape: Methodological Accidents and Anecdotes

    Open Access•Karen Lykke Syse•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Science and…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 5

This article explores the potential of giving animals a more prominent role in landscape studies. Through an historical constructivist approach, animals can function as object, text, happening, and as a fragment of a larger environmental history. Using empirical examples from Norway and Scotland, animals’ symbolic, social, and cultural availability are addressed. After presenting two case studies I claim that we can enrich our understanding of ru…

  • Otters as Symbols in the British Environmental Discourse

Karen Lykke Syse, Karen Victoria Lykke Syse•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 6

The otter is a top predator demanding clean water to survive and has thus become an important biological indicator of the purity and health of water and wetland ecosystems. Using the constructivist approach to explore literary and ethnographic sources, I argue that otters, in addition to being biological indicators, have become meaningful and necessary environmental symbols and function as mediators of ecological values. Following this, I argue t…

  • The Ebb and Flow of Trees and Farmland: Symbols of Nationhood in Scotland and Norway

Karen Lykke Syse•ARTICLE•Journal of the North Atlantic•2013•References: 2

How does historiography merge with national stories and shape tangible land use and land management issues? This article explores how two national stories—“The Free Norwegian Farmer” in Norway and “The Caledonian Forest” in Scotland—have become influential. More specifically, it investigates how they activate key symbols which are used as both ends and means in landscape-management policies. Using trees as a starting point, this article will show…

  • Expert Systems, Local Knowledge and Power in Argyll, Scotland

Karen Lykke Syse, Karen Victoria Lykke Syse•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 19

This article is based on research carried out as part of a larger project into land use and landscape in Argyll 1945–2005. The aim of the article is to point out the ways in which strategies employed by agencies responsible for monitoring rural landscapes interact with the ideas and knowledge of local people. It will provide evidence from field work in the region to demonstrate that, firstly, the programmes employed and enforced by national agenc…

  • Restaurer un paysage: Échec et réussite au Centre des landes de bruyère de l'île de Lygra

Karen Lykke Syse, Karen Victoria Lykke Syse•ARTICLE•Ethnologie française•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Ethics in the Woods

    Karen Lykke Syse, Karen Syse•ARTICLE•Ethics Place & Environment•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper explores the ethical aspects of an investigation into a forester's perception of his landscape. Three different ethical issues are addressed. The first issue concerns the ethics associated with the methodology of ethnology. The second concerns a forester's ethics. An example is provided which indicates how he applies values and aesthetics to the landscape in which he lives and works. Finally, the ethics of wilderness is discussed, conc…
