Reflections on Teaching
In this essay I share pedagogical methods I use to introduce “sociological virgins” to the power of the sociological imagination. These techniques often overlap but they fit into the following categories: Telling Stories (historical anecdotes, local or current events, personal accounts from my life or my research experiences); Waving the Sociological Magic Wand; Shock and Awe, and Role Playing

This article examines how the institutional, the informal, and the underground economy converge within the representative payee system, a federal program designed to provide needed income to poor, inner-city residents. Data from participant observation and unstructured interviews reveal how supplemental security income (SSI) entitlements help fuel the inner-city economy in two major ways: (1) through intended payments to individuals defined by th…

Data presented from participant observation among minor league hockey players reveals how workers react to individual and collective failure in their occupational world. Failure on the group level refers to losing hockey games. Failure on the individual level involves not making the team. A player can fail to make the team by being gassed, by being traded, or by being placed on waivers. Each of these ways has a separate meaning with a distinct se…
