  • The Empirical Development of the Child-Parent Communication Apprehension Scale for Use With Young Adults

    Anne E Lucchetti, William G Powers et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Communication•2002•References: 6

The empirical development of a Child-Parent Communication Apprehension scale for use with young adults (C-PCA, YA) is presented, along with tests of conceptual and predictive validity. An argument is made for the need to develop an instrument that distinguishes between a young adult's anxiety, or apprehension, about engaging in communication with his or her mother and father, or both, and general measures of parent-child interaction. Results indi…

  • Ethical orientations and criminal justice

Bryan Byers, William G Powers•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•1997

We identified and compared the self-reported ethical ideological orientations of criminal justice majors and other students from a course selected to represent the general student population at a midwestern public university. We also explored potential differences in ethical orientation as a function of gender. Criminal justice majors report ethical orientations compatible with those of the general student population. Males report significantly h…

  • The Effect of Compulsory Writing on Writing Apprehension

William G Powers, John Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Research in the Teaching of English•1979

The teaching of basic composition courses is oriented toward not only improving skills but also toward favorably affecting the student's orientation about writing; skills alone are insufficient unless one also has a predisposition toward using those skills. The recently emerging concept of writing (Daly & Miller, 1975a) appears to have a major relationship to both skill achievement and attitude toward writing. Writing apprehension is defined as a…

  • Language Indices in the Measurement of Cognitive Complexity

    Open Access•William G Powers, William J Jordan et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1979•Cited by: 9•References: 4

Within an accepted measurement system of the construct termed cognitive complexity, an analysis of the relationship between cognitive complexity scores and such indices of verbal complexity as number of tokens, type-token ratio, and noun-verb/adjective-adverb ratio was conducted. Writing samples used to measure cognitive complexity were obtained and analyzed for verbal complexity. Results indicate that number of tokens account for 33 percent of t…

  • The Measurement of Communication Apprehension in the Marriage Relationship

William G Powers, Kevin Hutchinson•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1979•Cited by: 2

The present study yielded results which indicate that spouse communication apprehension is conceptually and factorially distinct from general communication apprehension. An instrument labeled the Personal Report of Spouse Communication Apprehension was developed and found to have adequate internal consistency, tface validity, and predictive validity. Comparative analysis indicated diff;erent effects of general communication apprehension and spous…

  • When Galatea is Apprehensive

    Mary‐Jeanette Smythe, William G Powers•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•1978•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The effect of communication apprehension on teacher expectations was investigated in an ongoing educational environment composed of a multisection basic speech course. Students were classified as high or low communication apprehensives. The teacher expectations were assessed. Results strongly indicate high communication apprehensive students are perceived as having less success potential than their low communication apprehensive peers in the actu…

  • Verbal Behavior as a Function of Apprehension and Social Context

    Open Access•William J Jordan, William G Powers•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1978•Cited by: 8•References: 7

This study examined the effect of high and low communication apprehension in conjunction with social and personal settings upon verbal behavior. Step wise multiple discriminant analysis of the data indicated a linear combination of language indices (number of syllables, Noun-Verb/Adjective-Adverb ratio, and phrase repetitions) which discriminated between the high apprehensive-personal setting group and the remaining three groups. Results are disc…

  • The Rhetorical Interrogative

    Open Access•William G Powers•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1977•Cited by: 9•References: 14

Anxiety and floor control perspectives on speech disturbances were related specifically to rhetorical interrogatives (you know, you see, and okay) and tested in an experimental condition. Communication apprehension and situational stress conditions produced conflicting theoretical predictions. Both anxiety and the perceived potential for interruption increased rhetorical interrogative ratios with no interaction effect; thus partial support was fo…
