  • Cross-Cultural Dimensions of Meaning in the Evaluation of Events in World History

    Open Access•James H Liu, Dario Páez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 31

The universality versus culture specificity of quantitative evaluations (negative-positive) of 40 events in world history was addressed using World History Survey data collected from 5,800 university students in 30 countries/societies. Multidimensional scaling using generalized procrustean analysis indicated poor fit of data from the 30 countries to an overall mean configuration, indicating lack of universal agreement as to the associational mean…

  • Persuasion According to the Unimodel

Open Access•Arie W Kruglanski, Xiaoyan Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2006

This study describes a unimodel of persuasion offered as an alternative to the dual-process models (the elaboration likelihood model and the heuristic-systematic model) in which the term persuasion has been understood over the past two decades. The unimodel asserts that information previously referred to as (peripheral or heuristic) cues and that referred to as message or issue arguments are functionally equivalent in the persuasion process: Both…

  • Informational length and order of presentation as determinants of persuasion

  • Searching for commonalities in human judgement

    Hans-Peter Erb, Hans‐Peter Erb et al.•ARTICLE•European Review of Social…•2003

We outline a uniform model of human judgement wherein individuals combine situational information with relevant background knowledge to form conclusions. Several judgemental parameters are identified whose specific intersections determine whether given situational information would affect judgements. Abstraction of features from surface manifestations and focus on underlying commonalities afford theoretical integration across judgemental domains …

  • Individualism, Collectivism, and Authoritarianism in Seven Societies

    Open Access•Markus Kemmelmeier, Eugene Burnstein et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2003•Cited by: 18•References: 63

Building on Hofstede's finding that individualism and social hierarchy are incompatible at the societal level, the authors examined the relationship between individualism-collectivism and orientations toward authority at the individual level. In Study 1, authoritarianism was related to three measures of collectivism but unrelated to three measures of individualism in a U.S. sample ( N = 382). Study 2 used Triandis's horizontal-vertical individual…

  • Motivational determinants of systematic processing

Open Access•Gerd Bohner, Susanne Rank et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1998•References: 13

Extending the motivational assumptions of the heuristic-systematic model (Chaiken, Liberman, & Eagly, 1989), the authors hypothesized that a discrepancy between desired and actual judgmental confidence raises processing effort only if the expectancy that processing will increase confidence is high. In Experiment 1, university students expected to review information for upcoming social judgments. Desired confidence was varied through low versus hi…

  • Heuristic processing of distinctiveness information in minority and majority influence

Open Access•Gerd Bohner, Elisabeth Frank et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1998•References: 4

The role of distinctiveness information in majority and minority influence was studied. Students read a message containing strong or weak arguments advocated by a minority or majority source. The communicator's minority (majority) status was said to be either distinctive to the target topic or nondistinctive across topics. Major dependent variables were attitude judgments and cognitive responses. Across conditions, messages were processed systema…
