The Theory of Social Representation
This article begins with a summary of the four major theoretical and methodological models of social representations—the sociogenetic, structural, sociodynamic and dialogical models—and then explores new and original approaches to integrating these frameworks. The aim is to move beyond the mere accumulation or juxtaposition usually used in presenting these models and to propose methods for imbricating and interweaving them from three perspectives…

Social representations of teachers' dropout in the French context
This work aims to investigate the causes behind teachers leaving their profession in France, as well as the aspects that influence some teachers to stay in. The phenomenon of teacher dropout and abandonment is increasingly prevalent in OECD countries, particularly affecting new teachers. Taking a social psychological perspective, the research delves into the representational content of teachers' attitudes towards their profession. By distinguishi…
What does it Mean to Share ? From Actual to Perceived Sharedness in the Structural Approach to Social Representations
Or, le partage perçu co…
When Speed Breaks the Sound Barrier
A few taxonomies have been proposed to categorize the cues consumers use to assess the quality of a given product. However, these taxonomies do not take into account the possible hierarchy that may exist among these cues. Through three studies we tested a taxonomy based on the structural approach to social representations. This framework proposes a distinction between central and peripheral cues. The former would be essential whereas the latter w…
The social value of social representations
The central core theory establishes that the organization of a social representation depends on a distinction between central and peripheral cognitions. Only the first ones are considered as particularly linked to the group identity. Previous works showed that, contrary to peripheral cognitions, central cognitions are subject to social valorization within the group. The present contribution aimed to conceptually replicate this finding, and to exp…
French Validation of the Domestic Violence Myth Acceptance Scale (DVMAS)
The Domestic Violence Myth Acceptance Scale (DVMAS) was developed to study widely held stereotypical attitudes and beliefs, which contribute to the minimization and justification of intimate partner violence (IPV). This research aims to validate a French version of the DVMAS. In Study 1 ( N = 282), we tested the structure of the DVMAS. Results revealed that the scale displayed reasonable fit indices. In Study 2 ( N = 296), we assessed convergent …

Improving the Study of Social Representations through Word Associations
To grasp how individuals and groups perceive social objects of their environment, word association tasks enable the cognitions associated with a given object to be collected. However, the lack of information regarding the meaning of these responses implies interpretation and subjectivity in their analysis. To reduce this subjectivity, this research aims to validate semantic contextualization (SC), a procedure that allows participants to explain t…
Intimate Partner Violence and Help-Seeking
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global social concern: many women are affected by this phenomenon and by the difficulty of putting an end to it. This review of the literature aims to identify help-seeking facilitating and inhibiting factors in response to IPV. It was carried out on the PsycINFO and Medline databases using the following keywords: “intimate partner violence,” “domestic violence,” “help-seeking,” and “help-seeking barrier.” Nin…

Methods for Studying the Structure of Social Representations
This article deals with the methodologies commonly used in the framework of the structural approach to social representations. It concerns free and hierarchical evocations, the characterization questionnaire, the similarity analysis, the basic cognitive schemes model, the attribute‐challenge technique and the test of context independence. More than a simple review of these methodologies, it offers a critical approach concerning the problems encou…
Is the social representation of nanotechnology anchored in that of GMOs
The use of nanotechnology (devices/materials composed of parts less than 10 nanometres) in the development of new products is rapidly expanding. Industrialists and decision-makers consider nanotechnology to be the next industrial revolution, but fear they risk the same resistance to nanotechnology that their counterparts experienced with genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Although risk perception studies have shown that perceived risk of GMOs…
Using the Black Sheep Effect to reveal normative stakes
The present study shows that the paradigm relative to Black Sheep Effect (BSE) may be used to reveal normative stakes whose existence is not clearly identified. To this end, our study focuses on alcohol drinking practices among students, specifically with regard to drinking contexts (solitary vs. group). Our hypothesis was that the drinking norms are determined by their context (i.e. social vs. solitary drinking). More specifically, we suggested …
