  • Virtual unwrapping of the Bispegata amulet , a multiple folded medieval lead amulet, by using neutron tomography

    Open Access•Birgit Wilster‐Hansen, David Mannes et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022

In recent decades, computed tomography (CT) combined with suitable image processing software has become a valuable tool to enable the reading of texts written on scrolls, which are fragile, damaged, or fused together, without physically unwrapping them. X‐ray based computer tomography has successfully been used on scrolls made of soft materials such as papyrus and parchment. Although in few cases inscriptions on thin metal plates that have been r…

  • Effect of coating systems as a barrier to humidity for lutherie woods studied by neutron radiography

Open Access•Giulia Festa, Sarah Louise Lämmlein et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2019

  • Neutron imaging as tool for investigations on historical musical instruments

Open Access•Eberhard Lehmann, Sarah Louise Lämmlein et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2018

  • Beyond the Visible

    Open Access•David Mannes, C Benoit et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2014•References: 6

An altar table from the former A ugustinian church in F ribourg ( S witzerland) was studied by means of neutron and X ‐ray imaging to investigate the embedded reliquary. The neutron transmission images showed that the sepulcrum contained three objects showing high contrast and high attenuation. As the particles were almost invisible in the X ‐ray image, it was assumed that they were organic material. Comparative measurements on reference samples …

  • The olive-branch dating of the Santorini eruption

Open Access•Paolo Cherubini, Turi Humbel et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 17

The date of the volcanic eruption of Santorini that caused extensive damage toMinoan Crete has been controversial since the 1980s. Some have placed the event in the late seventeenth century BC. Others have made the case for a younger date of around 1500 BC. A recent contribution to that controversy has been the dating of an olive tree branch preserved within the volcanic ash fall on Santorini. In this debate feature Paolo Cherubini and colleagues…
