  • Class structuration, reproduction, and the politics of labour in India

    Open Access•Christian Strümpell•ARTICLE•Dialectical Anthropology•2023

The statement discusses Jonathan Parry’s recent monograph, Classes of Labour , and in particular his “labour aristocracy” thesis of the most privileged sections of India’s workforces that had been widely accepted in the social sciences in the 1970s but that had later been discarded. It is argued that the ethnography of an industrial town in Central India he presents in the monograph convincingly demonstrates that the relative privileges of public…

  • Social stressors and social resources at work and their association with self-reported health complaints among ready-made garment workers in Bangladesh

Open Access•Annegret Dreher, Rita Yusuf et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Our findings suggest that working conditions of RMG workers are rather good (e.g., characterized by low levels of bullying and high levels of support, vertical trust and beneficial leadership). The majority of workers reported good or very good health, although health complaints were frequently mentioned, first and foremost headache, cold, and back pain. Associations between psychosocial working conditions and health indicate worse working condit…

  • Struggles about class and Adivasi-ness in an eastern Indian steel plant

    Open Access•Christian Strümpell•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 8

In the eastern Indian steel town of Rourkela, Adivasis are widely stereotyped as uneducated, jangli ('wild'), and drinkers, and they are therefore held to make for a special type of worker. Their Adivasi 'nature' makes them an ideal fit for facing the heat, dust, and fumes in the so-called 'hot shops' of the local public-sector steel plant. It is also said that Adivasis are, in fact, not well suited for the permanent and well-paid jobs the public…

  • The politics of dispossession in an Odishan steel town

    Open Access•Christian Strümpell•ARTICLE•Contributions to Indian Sociology•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 13

The article discusses how industrial workers in Rourkela, a steel town in Odisha, experience the large-scale job losses entailed by the recent restructuring of India's first public sector steel plant. In this article, I argue that this manpower reduction presents a moment of what Harvey (2003) calls accumulation by dispossession and which he considers as the hallmark of neoliberal capitalism. Importantly, I add to Harvey's analysis that this proc…

  • The anthropology of neoliberal India

    Open Access•Daniel Münster, Daniel N Münster et al.•ARTICLE•Contributions to Indian Sociology•2014•Cited by: 15•References: 35

This special issue brings together ethnographic accounts exploring local and regional effects of transformations in India that social scientists have described under the heading of 'neoliberalism' (Alternative Survey Group 2007; Oza 2006; Patnaik 2007). Chief among these transformations in India are the economic restructuring processes after 1991 when the Government of India launched far-reaching policies of economic liberalisation, arguably unde…

  • Anthropological and Historical Perspectives on India's Working Classes

    Open Access•Andrew Sanchez, Christian Strümpell•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 48

With reference to original ethnographic and historical research on India, the papers collected in this forum suggest conceptual refinements that might re-centre the study of class in regional scholarship. Through discussions of class politics in industrial, construction and agricultural contexts, the authors interrogate the conceptual oppositions between stably employed fordist labour forces and the 'working poor' that have often constrained ethn…

  • Sons of Soil, Sons of Steel

    Open Access•Andrew Sanchez, Christian Strümpell•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2014•Cited by: 11•References: 53

Inspired by E. P. Thompson's modelling of class as the contingent outcome of historical processes, this paper explores how autochthony and descent came to inform the boundaries of industrial workforces in the Indian steel towns of Jamshedpur and Rourkela. We suggest that if class is a historical object, then it relates to other forms of power and identity in ways that question the use of rigid analytic typologies. In the private sector Tata compa…

  • Work stress

    Open Access•Maria Steinisch, Rita Yusuf et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Bangladesh is one of the leading exporters of ready-made garments (RMG) worldwide producing at very low cost almost exclusively for Western markets. Empirical evidence on psychologically adverse working conditions and their association with health in the RMG setting remains sparse. Drawing on insights from previous ethnographic research, we conducted a cross-sectional epidemiological study among 332 RMG workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. High work-rel…

  • Law against the State

Open Access•Julia M Eckert, Julia Eckert et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Law Against the State•2012

This collection of rich, empirically grounded case studies investigates the conditions and consequences of 'juridification' - the use of law by ordinary individuals as a form of protest against 'the state'. Starting from the actual practices of claimants, these case studies address the translation and interpretation of legal norms into local concepts, actions and practices in a way that highlights the social and cultural dynamism and multivocalit…

  • Social citizenship and ethnicity around a public sector steel plant in Orissa, India

    Christian Strümpell•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 7

This article is about a modern public sector steel plant in the state of Orissa and its promise to set standards for post-colonial India's citizenry at large. These steel plants were to provide their workforces with superior social and economic citizenship rights, which in turn were to serve as exemplary industrial relations for the industrialising nation. The steel plants were also intended to forge multi-ethnic workforces into exemplary Indian …

  • We work together, we eat together

    Open Access•Christian Strümpell•ARTICLE•Contributions to Indian Sociology•2008•Cited by: 9•References: 15

Among themselves and within their families, workers of a public sector power project in Orissa, constantly and intentionally, violate the restrictions on inter-caste contact that they perceive as prevailing in their various villages of origin. Subscribing to the teleology of modernisation, the workers dichotomise the industrial settlement and the village as 'modern' and 'backward' sites, respectively. Their withdrawal into these 'backward' villag…
