Modelling Soil Erosion by Grazing: Recent Developments and New Approaches
Grazing is still widely held responsible for land degradation. The interaction between grazing and erosion is still rather poorly understood. As a consequence, counter-measures and associated management techniques have been slow to develop in southern Europe compared with Australia. Developments in ecological and economic-ecological modelling have improved our understanding of the processes and enhanced management capacity. Some of these developm…
Land and degradation as a complex stability problem
This paper reviews recent work in the fields of ecology and economic ecology that contribute to a better understanding of the grazing and erosion debate. The approach is through dynamical systems models represented by differential equations and expressed by the phasespace diagrams for systems. The trophic web concept constrained by competitive and societal objective functions is found to be suitable to free-range grazing in environments that are …
Atlas of Mediterranean Environments in Europe
Global Environmental Change and Regional Response: The European Mediterranean
The study of global environmental change should involve geographers in the investigation of regional impacts. Although global changes are important objects of scientific study, their human significance is shaped by the geography of their impact. This depends in turn on spatial and temporal variabilities at regional and local levels which are the complex outcomes of physical, cultural and socio-economic processes. Compared with the variability imp…
Vegetation and Erosion: Processes and Environment
The agency of organic beings - a selective review of recent work in biomorphology, H.Viles aspect, vegetation cover and erosion on semi-arid hillslopes, M.J.Kirkby, K.Atkinson and J.Lockwood the interaction of vegetational and erosional dynamics in land degradation - spatial outcomes, J.Thornes geomorphic effects of vegetation cover and management - some time and space considerations in prediction of erosion and sediment yield, S.W.Trimble recurr…
Soil Hydrology, Nutrient and Erosional Response to the Clearance of Terra Firme Forest, Maraca Island, Roraima, Northern Brazil
tension and water fluxes, overland flow, the production of water and sediment yield, and the losses of nutrients in eroded soil materials from the plots. This paper describes the background to the investigation and indicates and discusses the main results. Surface runoff is dominated by treatment with complete clearance yielding fivefold that on partially and uncleared sites. Subsurface fluxes reflect topography, which controls variable source ar…

Man and Environmental Processes: A Physical Geography Perspective
Landscape Sensitivity and Change
The general concepts generated by modern studies of geomorphological processes are examined in terms of their utility for models of long-term landform evolution. The work is summarized by four fundamental propositions of landform genesis. These include the idea that each set of environments is represented by constant processes and characteristic landforms which tend to persist over time. 'Geomorphological' time is divided into the time taken to a…
