Making the margins of masculinities: Three cases from a Finnish lower secondary school
Pupils’ right to inclusion in an urban Finnish lower secondary school: A Bernsteinian analysis of pupils’ social relations
Finnish schools are famous for their egalitarian principles, but they face challenges related to pupils' equal opportunities and, more broadly, democratic schooling. In this article, we examine the lived consequences of a growing challenge, school segregation, using Basil Bernstein's concepts of inclusion and classification. Our analysis is based on ethnographic data produced in a lower secondary school located in a relatively disadvantaged resid…
Between agency and uncertainty – Young women and men constructing citizenship through stories of sexual harassment
In this article, we examine young people's narratives on sexual harassment on how it is endured, objected, observed, and negotiated in diverse everyday life environments. The article is based on an analysis of thematic interviews with 36 young people aged 15–19 living in the metropolitan area of Helsinki, Finland. Altogether 23 young women and 13 young men participated in the interviews which were conducted at educational institutions as individu…
Doing Respectable Heteromasculinities in Boys and Young Men's Talk on Sexual Encounters
Recent studies on boys and young men's heterosexual practices point in contradictory directions. On the one hand, boys and young men seem to be placing less value on 'hard', overtly aggressive masculinity and compulsive heterosexuality, in keeping with their adoption of more egalitarian attitudes in their sexual relationships. On the other hand, the hegemonic masculine notions that associate 'real' men with sexual prowess persist as well. In this…
EPA (aka A-Traktor) Girl Greasers in Sweden: Girlhood in Motion
This article focuses on girlhood in one of the youth subcultures of rural Sweden, EPA greasers. The EPA, a car that Swedes aged 15 and older can legally drive, is at the centre of EPA culture. In this uniquely and previously male Swedish youth greaser culture, there has been a recent increase in the number of Swedish girls driving EPAs. Previous research has shown how EPA culture and EPA girlhood are shaped through distancing from hegemonic urban…
Everyday consequences of selectiveness. Borderwork in the informal sphere of a lower secondary school in the metropolitan area of Helsinki, Finland
The concerns over school segregation have gained salience in Finland in the last two decades, paralleling the discussions elsewhere in Europe. This article examines from the pupil perspective, how school segregation and school selection are ‘lived’ in a lower secondary school in the metropolitan area of Helsinki. Using the concept of borderwork, I examine the hierarchies produced by the divide between selective, mixed and non-selective school cla…
Social Communities in Transitions: Young Danes’ Narratives on the Change and Maintenance of Social Communities
This article focuses on how the perceptions and functions of social communities in different social arenas change over the course of young people’s transition processes. It considers the perspectives of 12 young Danes at different life stages and based on their narratives about family, educational, and leisure communities, we identify different categories of social communities, which are affected differently by young people’s transition processes…
Patients' Interpersonal Communication Experiences in the Context of Type 2 Diabetes Care
The aim of our study is to determine the relational communication characteristics of professional-patient communication situations that have either facilitated or impeded patients' self-management. Conducted from the perspective of Finnish patients in the context of type 2 diabetes care, we used as our research methods an open e-survey and semistructured interviews. Data were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis. The critical inc…
Sports and structured leisure as sites of victimization for children and young people in Finland: Looking at the significance of gender and ethnicity
Availability and access have been central worries that are discussed related to children's and young people's sport and other structured leisure activities. In this article, we shift the focus towards children's and young people's experiences of violence perpetrated by coaches or leaders within such activities in Finland. We use a large-scale survey on children's and young people's experiences of violence in different spheres of life (Finnish Chi…
Intergenerational negotiations on (hetero)sexuality and romantic relationships – views of young people and parents in multi-ethnic contexts
This article focuses on intergenerational negotiations on young people’s (13–19 years) sexuality and romantic relationships in families where one or both of the parents have migrated to Finland. By utilising the theoretical framework of intersectionality and negotiability of family relationships, we seek to diversify the often problem-oriented and culture-related examinations of ethnic minority families and young people’s position in them. Method…
Respectable families: Discourses on family life, ethnic hierarchies and social positioning
Problem-oriented public discourses about families with an immigrant background shape the ways in which these families are seen in society, as well as the social positions it is possible for them to aspire to. Drawing on interview data, this article focuses on how family members with an immigrant background navigate their way through problem-centred discourses when speaking about their own family life. The article suggests that the construct of ‘a…
Raising Decent Citizens—On Respectability, Parenthood and Drawing Boundaries
Parenthood is a normatively regulated category with distinctly loaded moral expectations about “good parenting”. These normative expectations are lived through the body in gendered, classed, and ethnicized ways. We examine the ways in which parents representing majority and minority ethnic backgrounds construct an image of themselves as respectable parents, a construct that is intertwined with the idea of decent citizenship. The parents drew on m…
