Purpose development in the context of higher education
Enduring aspirations and moral learning
The present study tracked stability and change in college students’ aspirations, as expressed in survey open text entries at two time points three years apart. Interviews with a subset of respondents provided descriptive accounts of their experiences of moral/civic learning connected with their college experiences. Participants (n=640) were drawn from 11 U.S. colleges and universities. Surveys were conducted in winter 2018-2019 and fall 2021. Fif…
The contours of purpose beyond the self in midlife and later life
Purpose has been shown in adolescence and young adulthood to be an important component of positive development; however, little is known about its prevalence and function in later life. Surveys from a large (N = 1,198), nationally representative sample of U.S. adults ages 50-92 were collected to explore the prevalence of purpose in midlife (ages 50-64) through later life (ages 65+), as well as demographic differences and associations with indicat…
Why a True Account of Human Development Requires Exemplar Research
This chapter uses moral psychology to illustrate why exemplar methods are essential for building a valid, complete understanding of key domains of human development. Social psychological, economic, and biological-evolutionary paradigms for studying morality rely on samples drawn from the general population. This research reveals a bleak picture of morality, highlighting its irrational, self-interested, externally controlled aspects. If the subjec…
Passion & mastery in balance
Whether or not people belong to a true 'profession' as sociologists de1⁄2ne the term, they usually consider profes-sionalism to be a quality worth striving for.To call someone a pro implies that the person knows what to do and does it well.Professionals don't act naively, make stupid mistakes, or get easily flustered.Professionals have staying power and can be counted on: they 'go on with the show' no matter how they're feeling. It is this attitud…

Ethnography and Human Development
Studies of human development have taken an ethnographic turn in the 1990s. In this volume, anthropologists, psychologists and sociologists discuss how qualitative methodologies have strengthened the understanding of cognitive, emotional and behavioural development, and of the difficulties of growing up in contemporary society. Part One, informed by a post-positivist philosophy of science, argues for the validity of ethnographic knowledge. Part Tw…

Case Studies of Exceptional People
This article describes the use of the case study method for the investigation of exceptional moral commitment. William Damon and I used the case study method in this research because we were interested in sustained, long-term moral commitment and in the transformation of moral goals over time within the context of life histories, social relationships, and other influences. The study yielded in-depth life history interviews with 23 people who were…
A Longitudinal Study of Moral Judgment

The Use of Secondary Analysis in the Study of Women and Social Change
This paper presents a discussion of the special relevance of secondary analysis for the study of women and social change. Methodological problems associated with the use of existing data are summarized and some means of surmounting or taking account of those problems are suggested. The paper concludes with a discussion of the contributions that secondary analysis can make both to individual researchers and to the field of social science generally
Evolution of a moral-developmental theory
An evolutionary view of Kohlberg's moral stage definitions and scoring systems, with an exploration of structural and functional distinctions
