  • A Comparison of the Rural‐Urban Mortality Differential for Deaths From All Causes, Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer

Open Access•Michael K Miller, C Shannon Stokes et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•1987

Using a nine category continuum of residence ranging from major metropolitan counties of one million or more to isolated rural counties with las than 2,500 residents, the data presented indicate that although ruralurban differentials in mortality narrowed over the decade of the 1970s, by 1980 non‐metropolitan counties continuedto have crude death rates that were significantly higher than metropolitan counties for deaths from all causes, cardiovas…

  • Spousal agreement on the value of children and fertility behavior

  • Sex differentials in cardiovascular mortality

    K A Park, William B Clifford•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1987•References: 5

The nature and extent of spatial variations in sex‐specific cardiovascular mortality rates and sex mortality ratios are examined at the county level for the United States. The southeastern United States has the highest mortality rates for both males and females, while the central United States has the highest sex mortality ratios. When mortality is aggregated by levels of urbanization and types of migration for the United States as a whole, the p…

  • Validation of an inferential approach for the measurement of illegitimacy

    Open Access•Ronald F Chamblee, William B Clifford et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1979•References: 1

An inferential model which utilizes surname comparisons in inferring legitimacy status is developed and validated. Criterion validation is employed to assess the level of agreement between the inferential approach and the conventional reporting procedure. Data for the analysis are based on a sample of birth certificates contained in files of the National Center for Health Statistics for calendar year 1973. Results indicate that despite excessive …

  • Labor force participation of working mothers and family formation

    Open Access•William B Clifford, Patricia L Tobin•ARTICLE•Demography•1977•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This paper offers additional insight and evidence on the well-documented inverse relationship between female employment and fertility. Interviews with 388 working mothers from a probability sample in Robeson County, North Carolina, provide the data for testing the hypothesized relationships. Generally, the results indicate that lower fertility, lower desires and expectations, and earlier use of birth control are associated with work before the fi…

  • Value of Children and Fertility Behavior in a Tri-Racial, Rural County

Patricia L Tobin, William B Clifford et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1975•Cited by: 3

It has been argued that the narrowing of fertility differentials has been due to an increasing similarity in the function of children across socio-cultural groupings. The present research explores the relationship between the value placed on children and family size patterns and preferences for black, Indian, and white married men and women. The analysis reveals that values attached to children explain more of the variation in actual and desired …

  • Variations in value orientations and fertility behavior

    William B Clifford, T R Pitt Ford et al.•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1974•References: 12

A test of a hypothesis regarding attitudes toward nature, time, familial relations, activity, and sex was undertaken. The hypothesis was: wives who have a modern orientation to any 1 of these items will expect a smaller number of children, will have smaller proportion of unplanned births, and will have lower fertility than wives who have traditional orientation. Data on which the study was based were obtained from a project on family formation an…

  • Modern and traditional value orientations and fertility behavior

    Open Access•William B Clifford•ARTICLE•Demography•1971•Cited by: 9•References: 13

Modern versus traditional value orientations based on the Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck schema are related to family size preferences and birth control effectiveness. Value orientations are viewed as mediating the relationship between socioeconomic status and the fertility behavior variables. Interviews with a probability sample of women in Lexington, Kentucky, provide the data for testing the hypothesized relationships. The results indicate that both…
