Reassessment of the Neandertal fossil collection from Abri Suard (La Chaise de Vouthon, Charente, France)
Abri Suard is one of the sites localized at La Chaise de Vouthon in Charente. La Chaise is a well-known prehistoric place, historically and archaeologically as it preserved long stratigraphic sequences documenting Lower to Upper Palaeolithic human occupations. A substantial number of Neandertal human remains have been discovered in a sedimentary unit associated to MIS 6-5 (250-120 kya) from Abri Suard, which makes them some of the earliest Wester…
The Neanderthal mandible BD 1 from La Chaise-de-Vouthon Abri Bourgeois-Delaunay (Charente, Southwestern France, OIS 5e). Dental tissue proportions, cortical bone distribution and endostructural asymme…
The 23 fossil human remains found at La Chaise-de-Vouthon Abri Bourgeois-Delaunay (Charente, Southwestern France) are all attributed to Neanderthals. The BD 1 mandible represents one of the best preserved specimens recovered in this assemblage, still bearing the entire set of 16 teeth, and attributed to an adult - likely 20-35 years old –individual. The geochronological and paleontological data indicate that the Neanderthals from Abri Bourgeois-D…
Trampling experiments on bones in fine and soft sediments
Few neotaphonomic studies of trampling on bones have been made, especially in fine and soft sediments. However, trampling is an important taphonomical agent that can considerably modify a bone assemblage. Moreover, resulting bone modifications can be mistaken with other taphonomical agents, including human butchery behavior that can have great consequences on archeological interpretations. A better understanding of this taphonomical agent is ther…
Characterization of bear remains consumption by Pleistocene large carnivores (Felidae, Hyaenidae, Canidae)
Inland human settlement in southern Arabia 55,000 years ago. New evidence from the Wadi Surdud Middle Paleolithic site complex, western Yemen

Contribution à l'étude des sillons subverticaux intéressant des facettes interproximales
Neanderthal dental remains were discovered in the cave at Rochelot (Charente, France) which is known to have been inhabited by hyenas. Two left teeth, PM1 and PM2, presented subvertical grooves located on their antagonist interproximal facets. Macroscopic and microscopic examination revealed that each vertical groove of an interproximal facet resembled its antagonist groove. Bibliographical research and our experiments on modern teeth have led us…
Le gisement Pléistocène moyen et supérieur d'Artenac (Saint-Mary, Charente)
This initial interdisciplinaiy synthesis is the outcome of research carried out at Artenac since /993 in the context of scheduled excavations. Its purpose is to place the impressive sequence of animal and human occupations within the depositional and post-depositional history of the cavity. During part of the Middle and early Upper Pleistocene, the cave served in turn as a den for Bears and Felines, a natural trap for animals, a Hyena lair and a …
