New Insights on the Turin Shroud’s Body Image
Various images of the face of the Turin Shroud Man, acquired at different wavelengths, from the near infrared region to the ultraviolet, have been studied and compared. A correlation as a function of the wavelength, between the penetration depth in the fabric of the incident light and the anatomic details visible on the images, is discussed based on the physical properties of linen threads and light. In addition, the backside of the Turin Shroud,…
X-ray Dating of a Turin Shroud’s Linen Sample
On a sample of the Turin Shroud (TS), we applied a new method for dating ancient linen threads by inspecting their structural degradation by means of Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS). The X-ray dating method was applied to a sample of the TS consisting of a thread taken in proximity of the 1988/radiocarbon area (corner of the TS corresponding to the feet area of the frontal image, near the so-called Raes sample). The size of the linen sample wa…
Science and Christian Faith
Taking the Turin Shroud as an example, this paper analyzes the strict relationship between science and faith, considered as two forms of knowledge that try to explain the world according to two different methods. In fact, while we are often offered a dualistic vision that tends to separate science and faith, leading them to be two spheres in continuous conflict with each other, the most important Relic of Christianity just shows the opposite
X-ray Dating of Ancient Linen Fabrics
We propose a new method for dating ancient linen threads by inspecting their structural degradation by means of wide-angle X-ray scattering. X-ray dating of a textile sample can be performed nondestructively and on a submillimeter area, e.g., 0.2 × 0.5 mm2, exploiting new table-top X-ray micro-sources. A theoretical formula is derived for dating linen samples directly from wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements. Our preliminary results show tha…
A Comparison between the Face of the Veil of Manoppello and the Face of the Shroud of Turin
Recently we have studied the unusual optical properties of the Veil of Manoppello, a canvas representing the face of Jesus Christ, and restored digitally the face, by eliminating the distortions of the anatomic details due the yielding of the very fine structure of the fabric. The aim of the present paper is to compare the restored face of the Veil with that visible on the Turin Shroud. In particular, the paper focuses on assessing whether the tw…
Yellowing of Ancient Linen and Its Effects on the Colours of the Holy Face of Manoppello
On both sides of the Veil of Manoppello, made with very thin linen, translucent linen threads, probably starched, a Holy Face of Jesus Christ is visible. During the centuries, the yellowing of the linen threads has changed the aspect of the original face, in particular producing unnatural colours of the eyes. Indeed, as inferred by some experimental evidences, both on a microscopic and a macroscopic scale, the eyes were probably originally blue. …
Do gold particles from the Turin Shroud indicate its presence in the Middle East during the Byzantine Empire
Why is the Turin Shroud Authentic
Why is the Turin Shroud Not Fake
The Turin Shroud From a scientific point of view, it is important because it shows a double image of a man up to now not reproducible nor explainable; it is also religiously important because, according to the Christian tradition, it shows some traces of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. A recent paper Consequently, some researchers influence the scientific aspects of the most important Relic of Christianity based on their personal religious aspe…
Imaging Analysis and Digital Restoration of the Holy Face of Manoppello—Part II
In this second work on the Holy Face of Manoppello, known also as the Veil, we have performed a spectral analysis of the transmitted image. Its thin linen threads are translucent, presumably because starched, allowing light to pass through them. As a result, the yellowish colour of the ancient linen and starch contribute substantially to the final hues of the Holy Face, especially when the Veil is lit from the backside with grazing light. Spectro…
Imaging Analysis and Digital Restoration of the Holy Face of Manoppello—Part I
The Veil of Manoppello is an icon of the face of Christ (Holy Face). Its particular characteristic is being semitransparent. The face is visible on both sides (front–back) and, depending on the lighting and observation conditions, shows some differences in the anatomical details. An analysis of this icon has allowed us to clarify some aspects of the possible physical mechanism underlying its unusual optical behavior. It is a linen fiber fabric co…
