  • Extraordinary powers for extraordinary times”

    Open Access•Andrew Brooks, Astrid Lorange•ARTICLE•Crime Media Culture An…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In this paper, we offer a conjunctural analysis of policing and incarceration, examining their expansion in relation to structural economic conditions over the last 50 years and interrogating how the sudden onset of the Covid-19 pandemic enabled extraordinary growth in policing powers in the Australian jurisdictions of New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria (VIC). We examine how popular support for police-led responses to crisis and fines as a common…

  • Torrens Title

    Open Access•Andrew Brooks, Astrid Lorange•ARTICLE•Race & Class•2022

This article argues that property law can be understood as a key infrastructure of settler-colonial sovereignty. Rather than a simple importation of British law, the frontier mentality of the colonial outpost allowed for the implementation of a new legal framework for the allocation and registration of land. Taking the example of Torrens Title allows for an analysis of the ‘structures of feeling’ that are generated by, and that naturalise in turn…

  • Endless Study, Infinite Debt

Open Access•Astrid Lorange, Andrew Brooks•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Teaching and…•2022•References: 2

This paper begins by considering the state of higher education in Australia, following structural changes facilitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We consider the longer-term effects of neoliberal ideology on the sector, charting the way that ongoing crises of/in higher education work to co-opt university workers and students into a position in which they are required to defend the idea of the university as a site of enlightenment. We then discuss t…

    Andrew Brooks, Astrid Lorange•ARTICLE•Continuum•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In this paper we take up the concept of the ‘chorus’ as explored by Saidiya Hartman in Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments. In that book, Hartman imagines the chorus as a collective expression of resistance and survival – the sound of many voices speaking out and speaking up. We argue that the concept of the chorus can be understood in Marxist terms as an expression of surplus population, and as such, is always provoking crisis. We consider surp…

  • Teaching Post-Pornography

    Open Access•T Gregory, Astrid Lorange•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies Review•2018•Cited by: 3

This article introduces the term 'post-pornography', drawing on diverse texts from the last three decades. We propose that 'post-pornography' expands Porn Studies beyond its focus on explicit representations of sex. First, we outline the history of post-pornography as a concept that emerged in the sex-positive, anti-censorship and queer/feminist moment in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s and has subsequently been taken up by a diverse gro…

  • Assemblage or history
