Trapdoors
In this intervention, we raise concerns about the latent authoritarian potential of academic bureaucracies to restrict or even prohibit spaces for critical exchange on highly politicized issues. We introduce the term “trapdoors” to describe how academic bureaucracies are able to silently limit free speech on controversial topics such as Palestine solidarity. Trapdoors are rules and regulations, such as fire safety measures, that normally do not i…
Feminist Urbanism
Buenos Aires is globally appealing for its diverse culture, history, and opportunities. It lures people for employment, education, and healthcare, adding to urbanization tensions. The city administration advertises integrative urbanism to improve attractiveness but struggles with high crime rates, particularly compared to some European cities. This study focuses on safety through a feminist urbanism lens. We question the effectiveness of safety m…
Integrating scientific and local knowledge to address environmental conflicts
The world is witnessing an increase in environmental conflicts (ECs) caused by the overexploitation and pollution of natural resources. We argue that addressing the unsustainable and vicious cycle of most contemporary human-nature interactions fuelling these conflicts requires a shift towards inter- and transdisciplinary research. Through critical reflection upon six case studies, we conclude that transdisciplinary approaches often require academ…
Epistemic Marginality, Higher and Environmental Education in Colombia
Due to their ecological and cultural wealth and diversity many Latin American countries suffer from the exploitation of natural resources and environmental conflicts. These are furthered by many interconnected factors: divergent world views on land and territory and the competitive interests that stem from them (land and nature as livelihood with symbolic meaning vs. land and its resources as commodity), multiple legal systems (legal pluralism), …
Perspectives on the European Border Regime
This issue examines politics and practices that challenge the European border regime by contesting and negotiating asylum laws and regulations, practices of separation in refugee camps and accommodation centers, as much as political acts by undocumented migrants and activists seeking alternative ways of cohabitation. The different contributions all highlight the role of civil society initiatives during the migration movements in 2015 and 2016 in …
A Conceptual Shift in Studies of Belonging and the Politics of Belonging
The study of belonging, its underlying notions, and the politics of belonging shows that social, political, and territorial demarcations are still based on essentialist conceptions of the collective. These are often applied and reproduced in the social sciences as a result of methodological nationalism. Space-sensitive studies of migration and globalization and a return to the material have recently challenged social constructivist lines of argum…
Creative Activism and Art Against Urban Renaissance and Social Exclusion – Space Sensitive Approaches to the Study of Collective Action and Belonging
Creative activism and urban art are increasingly being used as an instrument to collectively re‐appropriate the urban space and thus articulate urban belonging and citizenship from below. In cities worldwide, where different politics of place stimulate capitalist appropriation, individuals and groups use the public space as a laboratory for resistance, creative act, and as a medium for communication. As such, creative activism is a strategy for t…
Transboundary Water Resources Management
improving water allocation in the Volta Basin of the West African savannah zone under climate change conditions. One of the main objectives of the project is the development of a scientifically sound and user-friendly decision support system (DSS) to be used by water management actors at different societal levels. One potential user for a DSS operating at trans-boundary level is the Volta Basin Authority, created in 2006 by the
