Neanderthal plant use and stone tool function investigated through non-pollen palynomorphs analyses and pollen washes in the Abri du Maras, South-East France
Advancing the Analysis of Past Human/Plant Relationships
The ‘pollen washes’ technique, based on the analysis of the pollen embedded in the porous surface of archaeological artefacts, is developed for investigating past plant usage and consumption and to characterize the functionality of artefacts related to plant processing, gathering and storage. The research presented results in relevant methodological improvements of this technique, which has never previously been applied on materials from European…
New data concerning “large blades” in Catalonia
The study of large chert blades documented in funerary contexts from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age in the north-eastern part of Iberia has been addressed in recent works by the authors, in which 49 burial sites have been registered with more than 200 large chert blades. In this paper the recent data obtained from the study of seven archaeological sites located in the region of the Penedès (southwest of Barcelona) is presented. The mac…
Upper Palaeolithic lithic raw material sourcing in Central and Northern Portugal as an aid to reconstructing hunter-gatherer societies
We present the results of the study of lithic raw materials used in Upper Palaeolithic occupations preserved in caves, rockshelters and open-air sites from two different geological environments in Portugal. For the sites located in the Lusitanian Basin, flint or silcrete sources are easily available in close vicinity. The Côa Valley sites, located in the Iberian Massif, are within a geological environment where restricted fine-grained vein quartz…
Adaptation to Resources and Environments during the Last Glacial Maximum by Hunter-Gatherer Societies in Atlantic Europe
Solutrean culture has been interpreted as a response to the Last Glacial Maximum in western Europe. However, to establish a link depends on our knowledge of the impact of global climatic changes at a local level and on the differential preservation and significance of the record. The identification of lithic sources, technology, function, and place of discard is an effective way to mitigate some of these biases and to improve our understanding of…

La caracterización y el aprovisionamiento de los recursos líticos en la Prehistoria de Cataluña: Las materias primas silíceas del Paleolítico Superior Final y el Epipaleolítico
This study is a highly innovative body of research on the supply of raw material in prehistoric Iberia. The archaeological assemblages from recently excavated sites in north-eastern Spain are clearly presented, as are the various methods for the characterisation of flints and the determination of geological origins. The study is important in terms of the new data provided on raw material supply at the end of the Upper Palaeolithic in Iberia and a…
