  • Children of Impurity

    Open Access•Laura Makarius•ARTICLE•Diogenes•1980•References: 9

Mythologies generally devote much attention to the birth of heroes and gods whose coming into the world is described as particular. Our first examples come from Greek mythology. The Furies, goddesses of vengeance, were born of the blood of Uranus who had been castrated by his son Cronos. Athena sprang, completely armed, from the head of Zeus which Prometheus had struck with an axe, an act sometimes attributed to Hephaistos. The Centaurs came from …

    Open Access•Laura Makarius•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•1973

  • The Crime of Manabozo

    Open Access•Laura Makarius•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1973•Cited by: 4•References: 24

On the explanation here given of the nature of the trickster, as the projection in myth of the magical violator of taboo, the contradictory features he presents may be elucidated one by one. A secondary feature, hitherto ignored in the Algonkin trickster myth-namely, Manabozo's brother's death-is shown to conceal the ritual murder of a near-kinsman committed in order to obtain magical power for the benefit of the group

The first Satan presented a visage of dubious sex... Round his purple tunic, a serpent wound its iridescent body in the manner of a belt... From this live girdle hung shining knives and surgical instruments, alternating with phials filled with sinister fluids. • Du roi magique au ' roi divin

    Open Access•Laura Makarius•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•1970•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • The Blacksmith's Taboos From the Man of Iron To the Man of Blood

    Open Access•Laura Makarius•ARTICLE•Diogenes•1968•Cited by: 4

The status of the blacksmith in tribal societies poses one of the most puzzling problems of anthropology. By a strange paradox, this noted craftsman, whose bold and meritorious services are indispensable to his community, has been relegated to a position outside the pale of society, almost as an "untouchable." Regarded as the possessor of great magical powers, held at the same time in veneration and contempt, entrusted with duties unrelated to hi…

Open Access•Laura Makarius, Laura And Raoul Makarius•ARTICLE•Diogenes•1960

One does not have to be an ethnologist to know that fear of incest-a fear whose influence on modern man's behavior psychoanalysis has so ably demonstrated-is as ancient as human society. The overwhelming majority, if not all, of those primitive societies that it has been possible to study have revealed an organization governed by the law of exogamy -that is to say, by the obligation to marry solely outside the kinship group to which one belongs
