Two idea(l)s of the international rule of law
The international rule of law is a somewhat ubiquitous concept yet, as idea, it is marred by ambiguity and disagreement and, as ideal, constantly frustrated by the institutional conditions of the decentralised international legal order. Rather than necessarily undermining the concept, however, I argue that these structural conditions cause a kind of conceptual rupture, resulting in seemingly opposed or contradictory idealisations. On the one hand…
Charlemagne's Early Campaigns (768-777)
This substantial book may well mark the culmination of its author’s long and distinguished scholarly career as a medieval historian. Or perhaps it should be seen as the start of that phase, since further volumes dealing with the rest of Charlemagne’s reign may follow, though such sequels are not explicitly promised here. For more than forty years, Bernard Bachrach has been writing on military and diplomatic topics, mainly related to Francia and r…
The Visigoths in History and Legend, by J.N. Hillgarth
It is a heartening thought for early medieval historians that the last of the kings of ‘the Goths, the Sueves and the Vandals’ died less than forty years ago. This is despite the fact that the peoples normally associated with those names vanish from historiographical view at various points between the sixth and early eighth centuries. Until the accession in 1973 of King Carl XVI Gustaf, who finally renounced the titles, their memory was constitut…
The Bermuda Agreement on Telecommunications 1945
The end of the Second World War saw global telecommunications governance renegotiated. The dominant British Imperial (later Commonwealth) network experienced multiple changes: the tightly integrated and collaborative imperial governance system fell away as the governing partners increasingly pursued their own, rather than a collective agendas and as the ‘imperial’ company, Cable and Wireless', dominance gave way to a competition and interconnecti…

P2-41 Prevalence of smoking and its association with mortality in China
Background Over the past few decades, there has been a rapid increase in cigarette consumption in China. Large prospective studies are needed to monitor the evolution over the next few decades of the resultant epidemic of tobacco-related deaths in China. Methods During 2004–2008 the Kadoorie Biobank Study recruited 510 000 adults aged 30–79 from 10 geographically defined regions across China. By Oct 2010, 10 000 deaths had been recorded. Cox regr…
Making Sense of the Early Middle Ages
THERE seems to be a breeze of self-congratulation wafting around the world of Early Medieval studies at the moment. Novelty is in the air, and there is much talk of ‘new paradigms’, and the rejection of approaches favoured by earlier generations of historians. Claims such as ‘this book overturns traditional narratives’ are not infrequent.1 Admittedly, the most substantial of the books considered here relies upon an interpretational framework deve…
