The relationship between SFON and mathematical language: The mediating role of magnitude representation
Parents' use of sustained shared thinking during joint mathematics activities with young children: An investigation of its measurement, antecedents, and outcomes
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is currently a dearth of tools to assess parents' use of effective interactive strategies for supporting early mathematics learning. One potential such strategy is sustained shared thinking. This study therefore constructed and validated a scale for measuring parents' use of sustained shared thinking during joint mathematics activities with young children, and examined its antecedents and outcomes. METHODS: Four hundred…
Unravelling the pathways among relational language, number ordering skills, and number line estimation performance in Hong Kong kindergarten children
Parents’ attitudes towards helping children learn math: How do they matter for early math competence
Improving cognitive function in Chinese children with ADHD and/or RD through computerized working memory training
Clinical Trials Identifier: NCT06567444 (retrospectively registered) on 20 August 2024
The importance of home numeracy environment in preschoolers’ spontaneous focusing on numerosity: A mediation study
Mechanisms underlying the relations between parents' perfectionistic tendencies and young children's mathematical abilities
BACKGROUND: Parents' high academic expectations are positively associated with young children's mathematical abilities. However, minimal attention has been devoted to whether, and how, different ways of conveying the performance targets would result in different outcomes. AIMS: The current study investigated whether and how parents' perfectionistic strivings and concerns were associated with young children's mathematical abilities through home ma…
The Interrelations between home numeracy activities, children's attitudes toward mathematics, and their mathematics achievement
Parents’ perfectionistic tendencies and children’s early numeracy competence: The mediating roles of children’s executive functions and numeracy interest
Bystanders, protesters, journalists: A qualitative examination of different stakeholders’ motivations to participate in collective action
Both bystanders and journalists can play important roles in mobilizing and supporting social movements. However, there are few empirical studies examining and contrasting their violent and nonviolent collective-action motivations or perspectives on social movement goals. This study presents a comparative analysis of motivations to engage or stand aside from social unrest comparing bystanders ( n = 9) and journalists ( n = 7) motivations against t…
An investigation into the concreteness of manipulatives in mathematical instruction: Do the object and its label matter
Examining the learning effects of concrete and abstract materials among university students using a two‐dimensional approach
BACKGROUND: The debate on using concrete versus abstract materials in learning mathematics has been longstanding. For decades, research has focused on the physical characteristics of materials when defining them as concrete or abstract. AIMS: This study extends the field by proposing a two-dimensional classification, which defines materials as concrete or abstract based on the two dimensions of representation, namely object (i.e., appearance) and…
Understanding social critique in graffiti art from a (non-)Western perspective: Chinese students comparing Banksy and Zato through photo-elicitation
Although obvious in Western Europe and the US, the controversy about graffiti is not as pronounced in mainland China. While the creative/destructive act of vandalising public spaces and even private property brings with it certain issues and notions attributed to culture jamming, protest action, and subversive aesthetics, this is not necessarily how graffiti thrived within the leftist context of China. Unfortunately, since graffiti practice in Ch…
Acceptance of outgroup members in schools: Developmental trends and roles of perceived norm of prejudice and teacher support
BackgroundSchools around the world are increasingly diverse in ethnicity. Given the importance of peer acceptance in children's well-being and development, it is a pressing concern for educators to promote intergroup acceptance in schools.AimsFirst, to examine the developmental trends of acceptance of outgroup members in both the ethnic minority and majority students. Second, to investigate how outgroup acceptance is subject to the interplay betw…
Subtypes of mathematical difficulties and their stability
Some children struggle with mathematics. Among these children, some of them may be learners with mathematical difficulties. While research has revealed multiple deficits as candidate causes for mathematical difficulties and probable subtypes, the cognitive profiles of these subtypes are not fully understood. Moreover, we have yet to discover whether children may move in or out of these subtypes over time. This study set out to identify the subtyp…
What if Reporters Need Creativity to Keep Their Jobs: Aggregate Results of Journalistic Consensual and Conflictual Creativity from Front-Line Journalists Working in the Field
This article proposes a model of journalistic creativity based on 21 in-depth interviews conducted with seasoned front-line journalists and award winners from the field, together with 405 journalism students and student journalists. The said model frames “journalistic creativity”, which is hinged on the concepts of media professionalism from the traditional perspectives of journalism literature and political ideology albeit least studied in the a…
Being the minority hurts or helps? A moderated mediation model of group membership, cross-cultural acceptance, and school adjustment
This study examined the relations between majority/minority group membership and cross-cultural acceptance, and their linkage to school adjustment. A total of 2,016 students (ethnic minority [EM]: 51%; boys: 50%) at Grades 2, 5, 8, and 11 from 15 schools in Hong Kong participated in the study. These schools were either of low (below 30%) or high EM concentrations (over 70%). EM students at low-EM-concentration schools and Chinese students at high…
