  • Mid-Holocene glacial activity in the Pyrenees

    Open Access•Anne F Gellatly, Jean M Grove et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1992•References: 2

Radiocarbon dating of sediments from a bog at c. 2100 m in the Cirque de Troumouse provides the first reliable dating of Holocene glacier fluctuations in the Pyrenees. The oldest organic material in the bog provides a maximum date (5190 ± 90 BP) for moraines immediately downvalley, which are either Lateglacial or, more probably, Holocene in age. Bracketing dates on laminated glacioacustrine sediments in the bog indicate a Neoglacial event between…

  • Footpath Deterioration in the Lyngen Peninsula, North Norway

    Open Access•Anne F Gellatly, W Brian Whalley et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1986

Footpath trampling results in the deterioration of the physical and structural properties of a track surface. The effects of regular trampling by members of a large expedition in an area of arctic heath were assessed over a six-week period and again the following summer. Characteristic visual changes included the reduction in vegetation cover, and an increase in the width, depth, and extent of lateral erosion. Trampling increased soil compaction …

  • Historical Records of Glacier Fluctuations in Mt Cook National Park, New Zealand

    Anne F Gellatly•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1985•Cited by: 10•References: 1

Historical records, including maps, photographs, paintings and written accounts, are used to reconstruct the changing ice levels and terminal positions of the six main valley glaciers in Mt Cook National Park, New Zealand. The historical record, which began in 1862, is compared with the New Zealand climatic record for the same period. Patterns of glacial fluctuation are related to the general trends in climate. Between 1862 and 1888 there was loc…
