  • Postmodern Thought in Symbolic Interaction

    Open Access•Michael A Katovich, William A Reese•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1993•Cited by: 10•References: 93

Perspectives in sociology are currently being reassessed in light of postmodernism, which has been associated with the abandonment of faith in the social self and scientific inquiry. As an emergent problematic, postmodernism stands in sharp contrast to a modernist pragmatic (and innocent) conception of symbolic interactionism-which is centered in the Meadian conception of prosocial selves. However, this article identifies some "late-modern" inter…

  • Paternalism and the female status offender

    Open Access•William A Reese•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•1991•References: 16

Using an interactionist conception of delinquency construction, this article empirically examines the commonly assumed, male dominance explanation of the existence of paternalistic punity meted out to female status offenders by juvenile justice officials. To the contrary, these analyses lead to a conclusion of no gender effect across juvenile probation officers in their dispositional recommendations for one female offender. Given the conceptualiz…

  • Untimely Acts

    Open Access•William A Reese, Michael A Katovich•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1989•Cited by: 15•References: 56

Interactionists and labelling theorists have made actors central to a jointly constructed process of deviance. This article extends their arguments to the deviant act itself and suggests how uses and conceptions of time and temporality distinguish deviant acts from routine or other unconventional acts. It treats time systematically in relation to designations of deviance by, first, correlating timing with temporal structures; second, comparing an…

  • Sex and Mobility in the Dual Economy

    Open Access•Frank M Howell, William A Reese•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•1986•Cited by: 4•References: 20

Recent work using a dual-economy approach to labor markets has documented heterogeneities in descriptive profiles of workers and returns to human capital by core-periphery sector of the economy. However, an important need that has gone relatively uninformed is an understanding of movement across sectors of the economy as a dimension of individual careers. This study explores how sex is related to core-periphery placement and mobility from labor f…
