Toxicology in Antiquity
Social Analysis of Education: After the New Sociology
Structure, text, and subject
There is now a new sociology of education, a revisionist educational history, studies of curriculum as ideology, and even reflexive analyses of the sociology of education and of curriculum studies. The sociology of knowledge is the basis for most social analyses of school knowledge or curriculum. This sociology is built on a theory of representation or naming. One thing stands for another, usually an idea for a social position. Knowledge can be a…

Toward a cosmic sociology of education
We old warriors of ideology critique and wissensoziologie should not be too hard on ourselves for having forgotten reflexivity and the labors of putting paradigms, including our own, back into the context of history and social movement. Normal science is our necessary bread and butter. We achieved a lot by shaking the liberal foundations of sociology of education, although in America, despite a mandatory ‘inclusiveness’ in educational studies, in…
A Secular Alchemy of Social Science: The Denial of Jewish Messianism in Freud and Durkheim
This essay presents a reading of the work of two central figures of modern social theory that locates their work within not simply mainstream Jewish thought, but a particular Hasidic tradition. Further, I argue that lying behind this, in a repressed form, is an even older tradition of Jewish alchemy. I make no claim to have evidence that either Freud or Durkheim were directly influenced by Hasidism or alchemy, but I examine the parallels between …

After Postmodernism: A New Age Social Theory in Education
The foundation of a sociology of presence is first, in a rereading of social theory from a new, strategic vantage point that identifies the precursory elements of a new synthesis. Second, as the transition out of Puritan, Enlightenment sociology is described within a cultural movement, a new synthesis is also part of a wider cultural process, which requires some description; the culture which feeds emergent academic theory is itself part of a new…

Critical social psychology
Academic practitioners of social psychology have traditionally adopted a liberal position against the extremes of capitalist and socialist ideology. But recently this middle position has become extremely precarious, and the fundamental crisis in social psychology can no longer be ignored. The purpose of this book is to repair the severed connection between social psychology, the culture of everyday life and the structures of society, along the li…

Body and Soul: Sources of social change and strategies of education
In the past decade, the United States has experienced a deepening economic crisis and a decline in the quality of life (Castells, 1980). The search for security in material reward and in cultural meanings which offer consolation for material deprivation and uncertainty speeds up and appears in a caricatured and bifurcated form. Careerism in work and fundamentalism in belief are the most evident expressions of the frantic fashion in which individu…
