  • Late Quaternary sea-level history and the antiquity of mammoths ( Mammuthus exilis and Mammuthus columbi ), Channel Islands National Park, California, USA

    Open Access•Daniel R Muhs, Kathleen R Simmons et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Fossils of Columbian mammoths ( Mammuthus columbi ) and pygmy mammoths ( Mammuthus exilis ) have been reported from Channel Islands National Park, California. Most date to the last glacial period (Marine Isotope Stage [MIS] 2), but a tusk of M. exilis (or immature M. columbi ) was found in the lowest marine terrace of Santa Rosa Island. Uranium-series dating of corals yielded ages from 83.8 ± 0.6 ka to 78.6 ± 0.5 ka, correlating the terrace with …

  • Jarkov's mammoth

    Valentina V Ukraintseva, Larry D Agenbroad et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2000

A multidisciplinary team of researchers describe the discovery, in July 1997, of the skull of a mammoth with two very well preserved tusks. The discovery was made by natives on the steep bank of the Great (Bol'shaya) Balakhnya River, northeastern Taimyr, Russia. During a preliminary excavation at this site, about a quarter of the skeleton was discovered, as well as a fragment of skin (1 × 1 m) with hair, and several kilograms of wool. This note d…

  • Isotope Dating of Pleistocene Dung Deposits From the Colorado Plateau, Arizona and Utah

    Open Access•Jim I Mead, Larry D Agenbroad•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 10•References: 23

Identified dung and keratinous remains of large mammals are considered the most reliable materials to 14 C date, when the initial question includes the application of the date to the time of local extirpation and extinction. The Colorado Plateau provides a unique preservation habitat (desiccation), found in greater abundance of deposits than anywhere else in North America. We review 20 localities from the Colorado Plateau that contain dung of meg…

  • Archaeology, Alluvium, and Cave Stratigraphy

    Larry D Agenbroad, Jim I Mead et al.•ARTICLE•KIVA•1989•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Excavations for paleontological remains in Bechan Cave, Utah, also have produced significant cultural information. Episodes of cultural activity during the past 8,000 years, preserved within the cave, are correlated with alluvial events in an adjacent canyon. Preliminary analyses indicate that human occupation of both the canyon floor and the cave was determined by changing fluvial regimes. No cultural evidence was found in either the canyon or t…

  • Extinct Mountain Goat ( Oreamnos harringtoni ) in Southeastern Utah

    Open Access•Jim I Mead, Larry D Agenbroad et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1987

The extinct Harrington's mountain goat ( Oreamnos harringtoni Stock) is predominantly known from dry cave localities in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, in addition to two sites in the Great Basin, Nevada, and from San Josecito Cave, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. A dry shelter in Natural Bridges National Monument, on the central Colorado Plateau, southeastern Utah, preserves numerous remains of the extinct mountain goat in addition to pack rat middens. Remains f…

  • Dung of Mammuthus in the Arid Southwest, North America

    Open Access•Jim I Mead, Larry D Agenbroad et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1986

The discovery of a unique organic deposit in a dry cave on the Colorado Plateau, southern Utah, permits the first comparison of the physical characteristics and the diet of the dung of the extinct mammoths from the arid Southwest, North America, with that of mammoths from Siberia and northern China, the only other known locations of such remains. The deposit buried beneath sand and rockfall is composed primarily of mammoth dung, estimated at over…

    Larry D Agenbroad•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1978•Cited by: 7

The site occurs on the north slope of the Pine Ridge in Sioux County, northwestern Nebraska (Fig. 14.1). The location is ap proximately 23 mi. northwest of Crawford, Nebraska, in a southern tributary of the Cheyenne River known as the Hat Creek drainage. The deposit is contained within a unit of alluvial-colluvial fill in a small valley that drains a large perennial spring. The drainage is bounded east and west by Oligocene bed rock. Immediately …

  • Cody Knives and the Cody Complex in Plains Prehistory

    Larry D Agenbroad•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1978•Cited by: 2

Discovery of the oldest dated Cody Knife in the New World calls for a redefinition of the Cody Complex in High Plains prehistqw. Its greater antiquity plus its association with an earlier culture gives new insight into the developmental sequence of certain Paleo-Indian tools

  • Bison BisonRemains at Murray Springs, Arizona

    Larry D Agenbroad, C Vance Haynes•ARTICLE•KIVA•1975•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Bison bison remains in Quaternary geological or archaeological context are rare in Arizona. Less than a dozen such occurrences have been reported. The Murray Springs locality is the only geological occurrence yet reported in Arizona

  • The Distribution of Fluted Points in Arizona

    Larry D Agenbroad•ARTICLE•KIVA•1967•Cited by: 9•References: 3

A total of seventy-two fluted projectile points have been reported from seventeen localities within Arizona. The location and distribution of these points indicates that early man, using fluted projectile points, was most active in the northeast Plateau region, and the southeast Desert regions of the state
