Scenario Machine: Aesthetics of Absence in Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s 45th Parallel
Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s 45th Parallel (Citation2022) is a 15-minute film of a performance staged with painted theatrical backdrops at the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, a building constructed in 1904 on the United States and Canadian border, to symbolically mark the dividing line between the two countries. Abu Hamdan’s film narrates the real story of a fatal cross-border extra-judicial shooting at the US-Mexico border, re-told utilising the …
Mills, Manuscripts and Monastic Archives: The Phillipps Charters of Mont Saint-Michel
This article examines three medieval charters of the Norman abbey of Mont Saint-Michel, today preserved among the collections of the John Rylands Research Institute and Library. Rare survivors of the destruction of the abbey’s archives in 1944, these charters previously formed part of the enormous private library assembled by Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792–1872), antiquarian and bibliophile. They are here studied in detail for the first time, showcas…
From zero-base budgeting to spending review – achievements and challenges
This paper traces the development of spending reviews from their origins in a set of budgetary innovations in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s – notably zero-base budgeting (ZBB) and Planning, Programming and Budgeting Systems (PPBS) – to their application internationally for budget management and fiscal consolidation. Spending reviews have been successfully developed and applied in mostly advanced economies but, because they rely on adva…

Social Worker Working Conditions and Psychological Health: A Longitudinal Study
Good social work benefits the recipients of the social worker role, social workers themselves, their employing organisations and society more broadly. However, it is difficult to conduct consistently good social work when social workers have been shown to have chronically poor working conditions. This article, therefore, outlines UK social worker working conditions and well-being from 2022, as well as comparing these results to surveys conducted …

Closeted desires and open secrets: Raincoat and Noukadubi
This article argues that key films of Indian director Rituparno Ghosh – Raincoat (2004) and Noukadubi (Boatwreck, 2011) – anatomize a condition of unrealized desire that is created by the social expectations and constraints of arranged marriage. This desire exists at a level of ‘open secrecy’, that is, it is at once acknowledged and disavowed. Specifically, through close analysis, it is demonstrated that Ghosh’s films evoke the metaphor of the ‘c…
Serialization in Popular Culture
The idea that knowledge can be bound up and contained, A to Z and cover to cover, betrays a desire for comprehensiveness. The encyclopedic urge, as I will argue in this chapter, can be characterized by the struggle between a desire for completeness and an awareness of the impossibility of this ideal. Initially, encyclopedias were published in volume form. Such early encyclopedic efforts made rhetorical appeals to the idea that the text contained …

Wagner's Ring in 1848: New Translations of the Nibelung Myth and Siegfried's Death. By Edward R. Haymes
‘Der Ring des Nibelungen is one of the most ambitious works of art ever attempted. ... If we want to understand Wagner’s creative process as well as his attitude towards myth, history and politics, we must look at the operatic project he settled on in the last few months before the uprising in Dresden that cost him his position and almost his life’ (p. 2). The problem with any study of Wagner’s early sketches for the Ring, as Edward Haymes identi…
Konrad HIRSCHLER. The Written Word in the Medieval Arabic Lands: A Social and Cultural History of Reading Practices
Konrad Hirschler's study of the development of Arabic reading communities in the premodern era is an important contribution to the study of a time period that has not been the focus—at least until recently—of much scholarly research. Its qualities lie in the fact that the author has not only consulted a huge number of primary sources (many of them in manuscript form), but has also integrated his findings into a framework that clearly explores the…

Hans von Bulow: A Life and Times. By Alan Walker
Hans von Bülow (1830–94) is remembered today largely for his self-sacrificial role in the drama of Wagner’s life. ‘As the whole world knows, and is weary of being reminded, Wagner seduces Cosima, impregnates her with three of his children while she is still Bülow’s wife, and encourages her to leave hearth and home and join him in Switzerland. Bülow then disappears from view, his mission accomplished’ (p. 6). In this important new biography, the f…

Age and the Understanding of Emotions: Neuropsychological and Sociocognitive Perspectives
Sociocognitive approaches suggest that the ability to understand emotions should be well maintained in adult aging. However, neuropsychological evidence suggests potential impairments in processing emotions in older adults. In the current study, 30 young adults (aged 20-40 years) and 30 older adults (aged 60-80 years) were tested on a range of emotional ability measures. There were no age effects on the ability to decode emotions from verbal mate…

In contemporary film theory one may delineate two types of argument to account for the nature of the fascination of film both of which lead to the conclusion that the experience of cinema is an experience of fantasy.
